Reviewer: Carol Scott-Conner, MD, PhD, MBA (University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics)
Description: This is the seventh edition of a classic book on gastrointestinal surgery. It is organized in a similar manner to previous editions, with sections on esophagus and hernia, stomach and small intestine, and so on throughout the GI tract and associated organs. Each section is edited by a premier authority, and chapters are carefully chosen to reflect important topics and are written by key individuals. The book is lavishly illustrated in color. The previous edition, published in 2007, clearly was due for revision due to rapid advances in the field.
Purpose: The book has served as an important resource for surgeons, internists, gastroenterologists, residents, medical students, and other medical professionals whom it proposes to instruct (if trainees) and for whom it serves as a reference (if experienced practitioners). For more than 57 years, this classic has done just that. This revision remains true to the objectives of the original author while providing necessary updates. Such a book is needed now, more than ever, as surgical options proliferate for treatment of GI disorders.
Audience: It is written primarily for practitioners and trainees who need access to comprehensive information on these topics. Medical students may find it a useful reference. The editors and all authors are authorities in their field.
Features: The book provides a systematic approach to the discussion of disorders and operations, and it covers both adult and pediatric conditions. Representative radiographs and operative photographs enhance the text, and color is used in conjunction with line drawings for clarity. Tabular information (such as lists of differential diagnoses), and sections of pearls are particularly welcome. Algorithms and pathways are used selectively. References at the end are current and pertinent.
Assessment: This is a much-needed update of a classic that will be welcomed by practitioners in the field.
