School Library Journal - School Library JournalGr 5-8-In 1914, Ernest Shackleton determinedly set out to be the first to cross Antarctica on foot. Although the ice prevented his group from ever reaching their goal, they survived for two years in the world's most severe climate. They lived onboard ship, on ice floes, on an uninhabited island, and in a lifeboat sailing to find help. Fine has captured the excitement and adventure of this event exceptionally well. While keeping the reading level low and the sentences short, she relates the story in a way that will hold reluctant readers' attention right to the end. A well-designed hi/lo book, enhanced by maps or black-and-white photos on every other page.-Elizabeth Stumpf, Clearfield Middle School, PA Copyright 2002 Cahners Business Information.
