With a deep chestnut contralto weaned on gospel singing, she excels at humorous phrasing "What kind of piece of Chevelle is this?" she sneers in the drag-race burner "455 Rocket", yet Reed can expertly bring a mournful, deliberate, yet gorgeously tuneful reading to "I Gotta Right to Sing the Blues." Though she didn't begin recording solo work until she was 47 years old, Francine Reed is clearly in her prime, and fans of blues, soul, and jazz will hopefully find more and more of her to like. Ample, indeed.
