Editorial Reviews

Kirkus Reviews
A previously self-published novel, the latest from Strivers Row, a new African-American trade paperback imprint. Marissa just isn't the marrying kind-she prefers other women's husbands. Currently, she's dating four: true love Terrence, who won't leave his kids; supersexy Louis; Wayne, who's impotent but does his manly best to make it up to her; and Eric, a young dentist. Her nagging girlfriend Charmaine criticizes her morally questionable ways, but Marissa doesn't care. She likes being single, and with an MBA, a Lexus, and all that, this African-American princess is not about to compromise her independence by taking up cooking, cleaning, or any other form of domestic slavery in the name of love. In Marissa's not-so-humble opinion, Charmaine is old-fashioned. She can just go ahead and marry Gregory, that boring prison guard she thinks is so fine, even though everybody knows she cheats on him. But Charmaine might as well stop trying to fix her friend up. Her latest recommendation, a hunky contractor named Levi, is a No Sale: Marissa doesn't date men who do dirty work. Gay pal Brandon wrings his carefully manicured hands over her pickiness and advises Marissa to stop telling Charmaine about her affairs, but she insists that her love life is her business. Then an anonymous caller warns Marissa to "stay away from her man." The question is: Which man? Other threatening calls follow, but the speaker never identifies herself. Brandon, concerned for Marissa's safety, decides to get her together with Levi, who's remodeling his apartment. And what do you know? Marissa is attracted to him, even if he is single. And when her phone stalker shows up in person-luckily, on the other side ofa strong door-it's tall, dark, and handsome Levi that Marissa turns to for help. Briskly paced suspense short on characterization and setting, though some unexpected twists and turns keep things hopping. Author tour

Chapter 1

Spent, she lay on her side, her knees drawn up to her stomach, her arms crisscrossed gently cradling her tender breasts, humbly licking her wounds, quietly comforting herself. Holding her eyes closed, she tried to will away the ache between her thighs, though she knew it would eventually subside. Always the pain of being with Louis lingered longer than the pleasure of his passion; and always he stayed longer than he needed to—or rather, longer than she wanted him to. Telling him that she had a busy day tomorrow and needed her rest didn’t move him along any faster, but telling him that it was 9:15 did—he had an hour’s drive ahead of him out to Long Island. Yet it wasn’t the lateness of the hour that motivated him, it was not wanting to be made to lie about where he was coming from. He cheated on his wife with a clear conscience, he just didn’t like lying about it—he prided himself on not being a liar. As far as she knew, cheating and lying were one and the same, but that wasn’t any concern of hers; she just wanted him to go.

At the door, “Just one more kiss” turned into three more long, deep kisses. “I always hate leaving you,” he said.

“You know what they say about all good things.”

“And you’re certainly a good thing.”

Riiiing!

“I’d better get that,” she said, trying to pull herself out of his smothering embrace.

He held her tighter. “They’ll call back.”

Riiiing!

Her neck and face were suddenly hot. “Let me get that.”

“Let it ring,” he said, nibbling on her left earlobe.

Riiiing!

“Louis,” she said, pulling her head away so that her earlobe slipped out of his mouth. She was repulsed by his refusal to let go of her.

He pecked her on the lips. “I wish there were two of me.”

Riiiing!

Feigning a syrupy smile, she planted her hands firmly but gently on his chest and pushed him out the door into the hallway. “Sorry, you’re just one man,” she said, pushing the door up.

“See how you treat me?”

The telephone rang no more.

“Go home. You made me miss my call.”

“If it’s important . . .”

“They may not call back. Louis, please go home before . . .”

Riiiing!

“I’m answering that. I’ll talk to you tomorrow.” She closed the door and locked it. She could hear him laughing on the other side of the door. “Go home!”

Riiiing!

“See you, baby love,” he said through the door.

She dashed for the telephone in the living room. “Hello?”

“Slut.”

    *****

This book was a good read. Of course the ending had a twist but it was definitely one i didnt see coming. I thought the author did a great job expressing herself as if we were there ourselves. I recommend this book.

    Just Okay

This book was good until it got to the end. I couldn't wait to find out who was trying to kill Marissa. The ending was disappointing to say the least. The story does have a lesson and will make you think twice before you start to mess with somebody's man. This book is okay to read but you should borrow it. Don't spend your money buying it!

    Similar to a Lifetime Movie!

This is a pretty suspenseful book that starts right away. It is a book that you want to finish just to find out WHO!. It is SHOCKING! It is also a self awareness book that teaches woman that no one should deal with a married man (whatever the reason). It is morally wrong and there are consequences. The book has times in it that seem just to good to be true. I recommend for reading not to purchase.

    Wow...

Wow, this book was too good to put down! Some parts of the book scared the hell out of me because it was so realistic. I mean this can happen to anyone if they are in it for themselves and don't really care who they hurt. Read this and trust me you will think twice before messing with someone else's man.

    Ladies must read this first

This book was really good and let the skeletons out of the closet. This book told the story of a single woman fooling around with married men and thought she was happy, until she messed with the wrong man and paid the price. This book let people know the reason why women get involved with married men. I would recommend someone reading this book.
