Overview

On their U.S. debut, Norwegian pop duo M2M make Christina Aguilera and Britney Spears sound old hat. That's because 15-year-old Marion Ravn and 16-year-old Marit Larsen leave the vocal calisthenics to older and more skilled pop divas like Mariah Carey and Celine Dion. Instead, on SHADES OF PURPLE, M2M sing with a refreshingly wholesome naïveté and sound, well, the way teenage girls are supposed to. Some may recall the upbeat and uplifting "Don't Mess with My Love," which wisely advocates that girls not feel pressured into sex, from the Pokémon soundtrack. Similarly, the remaining tracks, several of which were written by Backstreet Boys collaborator Max Martin and Spice Girls producer Matt Rowe, address the pressing concerns of teenage girls. The innocent "Dear Diary" finds the girls reflecting on a crush who finally calls, and the lushly acoustic "The Girl in Your Dreams" tells the classic tale of unrequited love. Bad girls they aren't, but on "Don't Mess with My Love," the duo politely chastise a two-faced friend for trying to nab one of their beaus. M2M is teen pop at its best.

Editorial Reviews

All Music Guide - Heather Phares
M2M's debut album Shades of Purple features more of the sweet yet down-to-earth pop that made their single "Don't Say You Love Me" so successful. Marit Larsen and Marion Ravn write many of their own songs (a rarity in the teen-pop world), and the confessional lyrics on tracks like "Don't Mess With My Love," "Do You Know What You Want," and "Dear Diary" add a healthy dose of reality to the album's slick production and the girls' somewhat sugary voices. Overall, Shades of Purple is a strong debut from a young group that still sounds fresh and innocent -- also something of a rarity in teen pop.
Entertainment Weekly - Arion Berger
...some of the most incontrovertible pop since ABBA, thanks to a power lineup of writers and producers.
