Overview

Air Force major Nick Baron and his Triple Seven Chase team have just been handed a mission that is an absolute must-succeed.

An American operative—long thought dead and memorialized in the CIA’s highly classified Book of Honor—has just sent a desperate call for help from deep in the Chinese wilderness. There is only one plane for such a dangerous mission: the Shadow Catcher—a smaller, even less detectable version of a stealth plane. Only Nick and his team will be on board when the plane goes into action.

But what Baron and his men don’t know is that an enemy is already among them—and that the Shadow Catcher itself may be the ultimate prize…

Dollycas’s Thoughts I have Mr. James R. Hannibal to thank for a heck of a book hangover. I started reading this book and couldn’t put it down. James R. Hannibal is a veteran combat pilot with Top Secret clearance from the U.S. government and he writes what he knows and he does it really well. The thing I really appreciated was this story is written for people like me and the military jargon was kept to a minimum. My husband enjoys Tom Clancy but his stories sometimes read like a military handbook and fail to keep my interest. That is not the case at all with Shadow Catcher. The author had me from page one and held on tight to the very last word. The book starts out with a prologue from 1988 and then goes into the story in 2013 so you know these things are going to connect and with some very clever twists that is exactly what happens. Hannibal has created some very engaging characters. Their back stories are meshed into the plot effortlessly. This reader came to care about them very quickly. The story moves at a breakneck speed so don’t pick it up thinking you are going to read just a chapter or two at a time. It just won’t happen.

One particular player in the Chinese government is a very crafty fellow and he's looking for the upper hand. He wants Stealth technology and he has a plan to get it! This book is a must have if you are a military fiction fan. It is written by a current pilot of the Air Force. So, be aware this book is Pro-American and full of patriotism. Why should it be any different! Hannibal is able to write about bravery and patriotism all the while dealing the ugliness of combat. This book has great characters and there is more depth in these characters than you might think. The imagery of the locations and tech definitely brought me into the story as I just kept reading into wee hours of the night. I am certainly looking forward to seeing this series continue!

Both Shadow Catcher and Shadow Maker...excellent reads. Nice to see another new writer on the scene. As good as Flynn, Thor, Coes, Taylor, Coughlin... solid first stories. Good characters, good and believable story ideas. Give 'em a try. The only reason I won't give Jim 5 stars is because I want him to have something to aim at. Give the stories a shot. You won't be disappointed.

Exciting and thought-provoking! This is not your run-of-the-mill techno-thriller. Hannibal knows his topic from real-world experience as a stealth pilot, and he definitely makes the tech a character in the story. But there is much more to be found here than gee-whiz gadgets. Shadow Catcher is a mystery, a spy-vs-spy hunt for a mole that we can't be sure even exists. It is also psychological. Shadow Catcher follows Nick Baron's struggle to come to grips with the PTSD that is fueling self-doubt and paranoia and driving a wedge between him and his wife. Fun and literary at the same time - this book is the whole package.

A must read--Mr. Hannibal's expressive and provocative writing tell me has possesses a rare dichotomy of human nature. The warrior trained and experienced in combat and political intrigue combines with a tender heart to intuitively develop for the reader each character's strengths and flaws. He is an awesome story teller.
