Overview

Deepak Chopra, Debbie Ford, and Marianne - New York Times bestselling authors and internationally acclaimed teachers - have joined together to share their knowledge on one of the most crucial obstacles to happiness we face - the shadow. These three luminaries, each with a signature approach, bring to light the parts of ourselves we deny but that still direct our life. For it is only when we embrace our shadow that we discover the gifts of our authentic nature.

The shadow exists within all of us. It is a part of us and yet we spend most of our life running from it. But far from being scary, our dark side holds the promise of a better, more fulfilling life. Our shadow makes itself known every day. It is the reason we get furious over a friend showing up ten minutes late, yell at our parents or kids when they have done nothing wrong, and sabotage our own success at the worst possible time. Until we are able to embrace our dualistic nature, we will continue to hurt ourselves and those closest to us and fall short of our potential.

Combining the wisdom of three experts, The Shadow Effect is a practical and profound guide to discovering the gifts of our shadow. These three authors powerfully pierce the veil of our unclaimed self, releasing us from the past and propelling us on a journey to wholeness. No longer living a half life, we are capable of achieving our dreams and reclaiming the happiness that is our birthright.

Editorial Reviews

From Barnes & Noble

When bestselling author Deepak Chopra (Reinventing the Body, Resurrecting the Soul), Debbie Ford (The 21-Day Consciousness Cleanse), and Marianne Williamson (The Age of Miracles) join forces, readers—and booksellers take notice. This triple-strength offering spells out little-known formulas to self-empowerment and tranquility. A top-seller in hardcover; now in a paperback and NOOKbook.

Library Journal
This coproduction of the star spiritual-writing team of Chopra, Marianne Williamson, and Debbie Ford is a component of a larger project, the documentary film of the same name, which features these authors plus several other famous faces, including Verdine White of the R&B group Earth, Wind, and Fire. The shadow is the name they give to the fears, inhibitions, and unspoken impulses that impede us and lead to self-destructive behaviors. Their essays here deal with the history of the shadow, methods for dealing with it, and the relations between the shadow and the soul. VERDICT By virtue of its authors alone, this title will command a wide readership among spiritual seekers; its concerns, too, are real and timely.
New Age Retailer
“Beginning with the premise that people fear their shadow self, this stellar lineup sets out to bring the collective shadow into the light and teach readers how to manage it until it can be dissolved.”

Meet the Author

Deepak Chopra is the author of more than fifty-five books translated into over thirty-five languages, including numerous New York Times bestsellers in both fiction and nonfiction categories.

Biography

The practice of holistic and mind-body medicine has long been a controversial subject among medical professionals. Some view it as a healthy and natural alternative to chemical pharmaceuticals. Others see it as a system of placebos and new-age chicanery. No matter where one stands on this issue, there is no denying the influence that mind, body, and spirit practitioner Deepak Chopra has had on the world of medicine.

Chopra's bestselling books on a variety of topics have been translated into 35 languages. His lectures, seminars, and learning materials are immensely popular, as are his television specials for PBS. In addition, he has founded his own medical center called the Chopra Center for Well Being and has won fans amongst celebrities ranging from Prince Charles to Mikhail Gorbachev to Demi Moore to David Lynch. When financier/philanthropist Michael Milken was diagnosed with prostate cancer, he claimed that Chopra's holistic methods shrunk his lymph nodes by 90%.

Chopra's interest in alternative medicine initially grew out of concern for his own health. After moving from India to set up a practice medicine in Boston some 25 years ago, Chopra succumbed to many of the stresses that plague medical professionals. As a result, he guzzled coffee, chain-smoked, and drank heavily. Once he began studying eastern philosophies by way of Krishnamurti and Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, he became aware of medical practices outside of the sometimes limited western perspective. This awakening changed his life.

While Chopra is viewed as a major proponent of the role of Eastern philosophies in healing, he does not reject western medicine. In fact, what makes his approach so unique is the way he incorporates the best aspects of western medical research into his theories. This amalgamation of medical philosophies is at the root of self-help volumes like Restful Sleep, Perfect Weight, and Boundless Energy. Elsewhere, Chopra has addressed such diverse issues as reversing the aging process (Ageless Body, Timeless Mind), perfecting personal relationships (The Path to Love), and achieving capitalist goals via Eastern philosophies (The Seven Spiritual Laws of Success).

Chopra has also become concerned with the causes of war and violence and the principles of Eastern religions, especially Buddhism, and his books on these subjects have garnered praise from such major international figures as the Dalai Lama, Desmond Tutu, and Boutros-Boutros Ghali. Consequently, Chopra continues to play a significant role in world health and world politics in spite of detractors and skeptics. With an immense body of work behind him and more volumes of wisdom sure to follow, he continues to preach the simple philosophy he is certain is the key to understanding ourselves, mentally and physically: "We're not human beings that have occasional spiritual experiences, it's the other way around: we're spiritual beings that have occasional human experiences."

Good To Know

In 1999, Time magazine named Chopra one of the Top 100 Icons and Heroes of the Century.

Chopra's father was a prominent cardiologist and an anglophile who distrusted Indian philosophies and alternative medical practices.

Despite his reputation as a serious-minded intellectual, Chopra describes himself as "playful" and "carefree."

...a depth of experience and wisdom on this most vital of topics.

This book featuring Debbie Ford, Deepak Chopra and Marianne Williamson evolved out of the movie "The Shadow Effect: Illuminating the Hidden Power of Your True Self" that recently brought the three of them together. While the movie serves as an introduction to the concepts of the shadow and how it limits us as human beings, The Shadow Effect book is a deep exploration of that which most of us have hidden and tried to contain within ourselves. Of the three authors, Ford contributes the most clarity and definition to what the shadow is and how it shows up in our lives. But all share equally valuable information and insightes from their unique perspectives, offering a depth of experience and wisdom on this most vital of topics. Reading this book is both challenging and enlightening. It can be depressing as we learn the truth of who we are, yet hopeful as we discover the power that the comes from healing and integrating the Shadow. This is a must read for anyone committed to supporting a shift in consciousness on the planet.

    Clarity in an Unclear World

This book touched my heart and gave me so many new things to look at in myself and the world. All three authors take the Shadow in today's world to new heights in importance and significance. This is a must read for anyone wanted to know how to navigate the waters of spirit and emotion in a world full of chaos and confusion. Finally, the Shadow can be seen as the powerful issue it is in our lives individually and as a collective. Reading this book is a sure fire way to shift your perspective on life forever.

Is This The Moment When God Stopped Keeping Score?

I have heard a lot about this book and I am eager to read the rest of it, because it discusses the need to deal with the shadow in our lives. There is a conflict between who we are and who we want to be. Yet, I think that is because we are often stuck in the past, because we are bound by our past failures and mistakes. I am learning to deal with those mistakes now. I had just read "When God Stopped Keeping Score" which tackled forgiveness on a much more intimate level than I have ever experienced. I can only pray the Shadow Effect can build on the momentum that Keeping Score has already started.

    Annoyingly Repetitive

The premise for this book is so short and simple the author's found they needed to expound on every tiny concept ad nauseum to justify the $12.99 price tag. I tried to read it from the beginning but could not get through the Deepak Chopra part due to its lack of substance so I skipped to the Debbie Ford chapter thinking that I might actually get to some "meat",if you will, since she is the one who "officially" developed and lectures on the Shadow Effect. Unfortunately every time she came up with some "new" premise about the Shadow she was so repetitive it was hard not to feel bored.

There may in fact be some good ideas here, I, unfortunatley could not find any reason to scour through every repetitive concept to get to it. Also, the use of The Shadow over and over and over also felt very schticky, like there was some monster lurking ready devour our spirit any second.

    Strange book

This book is really for people who do bad things like all self help books are. If you are an honest person who obeys rules and laws, where do you fit into these books that talk about urges and indescretions?

For once i wish someone would write a guide to dealing with difficult selfish people. This book assumes all it's readers are addicted pedophiles and does not consider a normal persons need to understand how to simply live with others who do not or will not take the time to read how to live and respect others.

Other words, the wrong people are reading this book.

    The Shadow Effect: Absolutely illuminating

Reading this the first time through, I found it intriguing in the extreme. I immediately read it a second time to glean the process of finding your shadow and how to engage it. My life has changed. I now know why I am ultra responsible as regards work and school, and lax when it comes to "my stuff" such as exercise, binging on the wrong things and most important, not achieving my personal goals. I also learned experiencially if you want to change your life, read this book and learn to make friends with your shadow. I am much more balanced, productive in my personal life and happy.
