Legends of the Guardian King, book 2, from the award-winning author of Arena. Karen Hancock brings to imaginative life the supernatural battle between good and evil, the preconceptions that keep us from embracing truth, and the distortions that trick and trap us. Four years have passed since the conclusion of The Light of Eidon. Abramm has been living peacefully abroad, but when he hears of trouble in his homeland, he returns to claim the crown he thought he'd never wear. But he has many enemies, including his murderous brother. The only thing that will save him is the Light that lives within him, but to appease his critics, he hides this. Before he can ful&supl;ll his kingship, he must reveal the truth and be reminded, painfully and powerfully, that his destiny can only be realized through humbly acknowledging his own weakness and the utter suf&supl;ciency of the One who created his destiny in the &supl;rst place.

The entire series is excellent! Every single book is a page-turner! I truly enjoy the parallels between the internal and external faith struggles of Abramm because I could totally relate! Great read! Going to check out some of the author's other books.

This is an awesome book! A little repetative in places but a good read none the less. I was glad to see that she didn't just forget Shettai in the 2nd book. Good story and it makes you think about our own walk with "Eidon" and our own shortcomings, but always brings it around to how much he cares for us.

Karen Hancock's first two books won well- deserved Christy awards, and her newest offering is my favorite thus far. Fantasy draws me in because of those moments when the hero's epic journey resonates with my own battles. Hancock is the virtuoso of noble yet flawed characters whose example inspires readers to face their own monsters with greater courage. The Shadow Within swashbuckles with high adventure, yet also pulses with more intricate and complex conflicts. Abramm confronts deadly creatures, a brother bent on assassination, and religious and political intrigues. Yet, as the title implies, his greatest fight involves inner doubts, confusion, and temptation- another battleground every reader will recognize. The story is presented in a rich setting of vivid description and a creative, other-world culture. Against this backdrop, Hancock introduces an enchanting new character-Madeleine-a worthy annoyance and ally for Abramm. Well loved characters return, and I especially enjoyed Carissa's journey toward truth. All these treats combine with an eminently satisfying ending to make this story an experience I've carried with me long after turning the final page.

The Shadow Within is a great work of fantasy. Steeped in swordplay and turmoil, the novel draws one in, then startles with the stunning conclusion. Prince Abramm has been exiled from his home for five years. He believes Eidon is calling him home. So, Abramm returns to claim his rightful place as king, dreadfully upsetting his younger brother, who had claimed the throne in his absense. Rebellion leads to a final showdown, where Abramm is forced to ask himself the question, can he really give all he has, even his life, to serve his subjects? Karen Hancock is a thought-provoking writer, who is one of the author's favorites. She has written The Light of Eidon, the first book in this series, and Arena, a stand-alone book.

Usually the second book in a series isn't as good as the first. This is not the case w/ The Shadow Within. Karen Hancock is on of the best Fantasy/Sci-Fi Authors I have ever read, (and Ive read alot) and this series ranks on up there pretty close to LOTR. I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to read a story that has a solid plot, enough adventure to keep the pages turning, and enough intrigue to keep you guessing.

After renouncing the Holy Brotherhood of the Matis, Abramm the Prince of Kiraith was sold into slavery by his brother Gillard who wanted the throne for himself. At Abramm¿s lowest point he reached out to the god Eidon who accepted him as one of his own. He proudly wears the shield that every true believer of Eidon has. It has been six long years since he has been to Kiraith but he returns to take the crown he never wanted because Gillard is leading his country to ruin. His return is a dramatic one as he kills a spawn in a ferocious sea battle with the help of the Light of Eidon.............................. He openly challenges the council for the throne, not showing them he wears the shield of Eidon. The members of the council are so impressed by the man he has become that he becomes the ruler of Kiraith leaving Gillard os only the heir-apparent. He knows war is coming from many kingdoms who think Kiraith is weak and open for a takeover but before he can deal with that problem, he must come to terms with his younger brother Gillard who would rather plunge the country into civil war than see his brother rule. Abramm must battle religious fanatics, creatures of the shadow and the duplicity of man if he wants to keep the kingship. He must have faith in Eildon¿s plans for him and acknowledge his faith if he is to become the man he is meant to be........................... In Abraaham¿s world, his god is close to his followers, speaking to them and if their faith is strong enough, obeying his instructions. This is the second installment in the LEGENDS OF THE GUARDIAN KING and it is every bit as good as the prequel (LIGHT OF EIDON). Evil takes many forms in this story and one must believe in the light to see the darkness. Karen Hancock is a great world builder who has created a fantasy series that is reminiscent of the Arthurian mythos............................... The protagonist is a true hero because he takes on a kingship he never wanted because he believes his people need him to fight in, both magical and mundane wars, battle shadow creatures and human enemies and in time win the hearts of the people who once rejected him. There is a sub-plot involving the beginning of a romance between the king and the second daughter of the king of Chesdeh instead of the first daughter that everyone believes he should marry. Karen Hancock has written a beautiful adult fairy tale that readers will find delightful......................... Harriet Klausner
