Overview

The second installment in bestselling author Kathryn Lasky's staggering WOLVES OF THE BEYOND series, a spinoff of the legendary Guardians of Ga'Hoole books.

The wolf pup Faolan was born with a twisted paw, a slight defect that caused his wolf clan to abandon him in the forest to die. But Faolan, with the help of the grizzly bear who raised him as her own, survived.

Now he's made it back to his clan as a gnaw wolf, the lowest ranking pack member. And the hardships are just beginning. Another gnaw wolf, Heep, is jealous of Faolan and sets him up for failure. As if these humiliations are not enough, Faolon is framed for the murder of a wolf pup. Faolan must catch the culprit in time and prove he deserves to be a full member of the clan.

Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher

Praise for the first book in the Wolves of the Beyond series:

"This is a soulful, searching read consumed with the spiritual journeys of animals and the ethereal connection between slayer and slain. [W]ith an invigorating ending that bodes well for the next volume." - Booklist

"The author builds a captivating world of forest, snow and volcanoes populated by intelligent animals and weaves a compelling story sure to bring readers back for the second installment." - Kirkus

Children's Literature - Renee Farrah Vess
Previously, Faolan won the right to return to his wolf clan. Although he is back, he is far from welcomed. His position is the lowest of the low, a gnaw wolf, whose only job is to sniff for possible prey and grovel at the paws of higher ranking wolves. Faolan's upbringing by the bear Thunderheart, his physique, especially the mysterious swirl on his splayed paw, and his talent for gnawing stories on bones, separate him further from the clan. His chance to change his clan position is linked to the outcome of the Gaddergnaw Games. If Faolan can win, he can join the wolves of the Watch, an elite and reclusive group of wolves who protect the Ring of Sacred Volcanoes. He is favored to win, until he is framed for murder by another wolf that is determined to watch him fail. The second installment in the "Wolves of the Beyond" series takes place in the same world as the Guardians of Ga'Hoole books. A story about believing in yourself and achieving what everyone says is impossible, this is a novel for fantasy beginners who enjoy new worlds, new words, and prophesies. Reviewer: Renee Farrah Vess
School Library Journal
Gr 4–6—Fans of the "Guardians of Ga'Hoole" series (Scholastic) and those who ate up Lone Wolf (Scholastic, 2009), the first book in this series, will be eager to learn the fate of mother grizzly bear Thunderheart's beloved adopted-wolf-son, Faolan, who was born with a deformed paw and left to die until she found him. In this tightly plotted, lyrical tale, Faolan endures his lot as a gnaw wolf, but has no idea how to bend his innate bravery and confidence into the accepted fringe behavior, cowering and cringing while mashing his face in the dirt to show the required obeisance. Lasky blends her powerful skill in establishing a setting with Faolan's lilting poetry and song, revealing his tender heart and the forest's own beauty. She builds the wolf society as if it were a human tribe of both wise and blind leaders, living in a culture of cruelty, survival, evil, and honor. It is the magic of tribal strength and love that lays down the only hope for a talented young wolf. Readers will be delighted that heroes from Lasky's "Ga'Hoole" series appear to challenge the established world in this fascinating addition to the "Wolves" series.—Nancy Call, Santa Cruz Public Libraries, Aptos, CA

Highly recommended - a must read!

This is an awesome sequel to Lone Wolf (Wolves of the Beyond Series #1). It has a lot of interesting and unexpected twists to the story, and it's an "edge of your seat" plot. A great read for kids 8+!

    Hello

Hello my name is Fay. I am a good friend of Faolan. He says it portrays Thunderheart great! I will sadly not be in any books but I am Lanie's sister in Gaurdians of Ga'hoole. Suprisingly she is not in those books but she is the queen of foxes and a member of the band.

    Wow

One word. Wow. I read the first book and didn't think the second would be so....so..soo..amazing! Sometimes it got a little confusing and i had to reread parts but,it was really good and i might just have to read it a 2nd time. These books are so detailed and the plot line feels so real and interesting lke it ws actually happening i dunno why they decided to call it shadow though.... i've already finished the 3rd book and just so you know it has a bad word in it jusst sayin'... Anywayz the book is awesome and Faolan ends up actually getting some respect and he knows that he's somewhat special and he also learns (i feel like i'm saying "and" to often) that some wolves are afraid of the swirl on his paw like the other gnaw wolf Hepe.Hepe gets so scared of the print that he doesn't bite Faolan when the cheiften told him too...pretty weird right? Anyways that's the end of my review buy the book RIGHT NOW! It's worth it trust me! I loved this book once i started it was hard for me to stop! And again that one word... Wow.(only it's a bigger wow this time lol - i'm not kidding.. lol)
