All Music Guide - Johnny Loftus
Static-X's Shadow Zone seems to have arrived via wormhole from 1998. In songs like "Kill Your Idols," "Destroy All," and "Monster," Wayne Static -- who's never sounded more like Korn's Jonathan Davis -- yells "My head's a loaded gun" and "Breathing, killing, seething, willing" over thudding thrash busied up with electronic fuzz. Producer Josh Abraham Orgy, Crazy Town buries the drumming behind a wall of guitars, and by mid-album, "The Only"'s foray into Stabbing Westward-style electro-industrial provides depth by heading in a different direction. Even here, Static's vocal still resembles Davis. Reliance on formula has always been admissible in metal, and Static-X are ...

Reliance on formula has always been admissible in metal, and Static-X are indeed formulaic on Shadow Zone, although as the album draws to a close, "So" and "Invincible" debut some sort of double-track effect on Static's voice, which makes him sound like Layne Staley instead of Davis.

A record that's as contagious as it is caustic.

    Very dissapointed

I'm not dissapointed with Shadow Zone. I'm dissapointed with other reviewers rating one of Static X's best cds so low. This cd is seriously one of my favorite cd's and has a more vocal touch than any of their previous album (which buy the way, it's their 3rd album, not their 2nd). Songs like Shadow Zone, Destroy All, The Only, Otsegolectric, and Invincible fit right in with the bands talent. There are one or two songs that are mediocre, but even those rock. And by the way reviewers, sometimes change is good and in this case, it's definitely true.

    NoseDive to Mediocrity

Wisconsin Death Trip was an amazing first album on par with albums like Cowboys From Hell and Korn's self titled debut. Machine was was pretty good and I enjoyed it a lot. In my experience most second albums are all over the place as the band has already presented the best of their formative songs on their first album and trying are to create a new and coherent narrative. However Static-X have veered way off course and decided to skip their "Master of Puppets" and head straight for their "Load". The production on this album is weak and the nu-metal power ballads don't work with Wayne's voice and the guitars sound neutered as well.

    uninspired drivel

How the mighty have fallen. Static X used to be one of the best bands in the metal scene. Their other 2 albums are pretty amazing works of art. Shadow Zone on the other comes off as a cheap attempt to cash in on the hope of radio play and money. I'm not sure what happened here. Perhaps these guys need to tell their producer to get lost. Someone either in or around this band is making some very bad decisions. The only remotely redeeming track on this disc is Destroy All but even it isn't all that impressive. Something really bad happened here. Two words people...sell out.

    Great Stuff

This CD is pretty good. I am a huge fan of metal-rock music. The Only, and So, their singles, are very good. Another thing is the keyboards on this album are magnificant. It's a great album. All metal fans should own Shadow Zone.

    Not quite grown up

WELL, HERE IT GOES AGAIN. I BOUGHT THE LAST TWO CD'S WITHIN THE PAST TWO YEARS, AND WAS SOMEWHAT IMPRESSED. IN ALL ESENCE, THE BAND COULD HAVE JUST PUT ALL THREE OF THESE CDS TOGETHER, BY TAKING THE BEST SONGS (IF THERE ARE ANY) AND MAKING A MORE FULL CD. ALL IN ALL THIS CD IS BETTER THAN REST, BY NOT RELYING ON ANGRY GRUDGES, AND SUICIDAL BELLOWING. SOMEDAY MAYBE THEY WILL GROW UP, BUT AS FOR NOW, THEY HAVENT, AND IT SEEMS TO WORK FOR THEM! (ps. that music reviewer is horrible)

    STATIC-X ROCKS

I think that Static-X is the single most best band in the world. The new cd that came out October 7, "Shadow Zone" is a masterpiece. I have been waiting for about 4 motnths for it to come out in stores. Finally it came. I got it the first day it came out and I was amazed. It is great! If you like metal, I urge you to buy this cd.
