Overview

Full length NEW ADULT novel

She's in for the fight of her life...with the man who only wants to be her lover.

Fighter Mia Anderson has faced the dark side of life and survived. But just getting by is no longer enough. To fund her new life with her baby sister, she’s determined to beat the reigning king of the male fighters in New York’s underground MMA circuit, Tray “Fox” Knox.

Tray refuses to fight a woman, until he learns Mia’s tougher than anyone he has ever known. He soon realizes he wants more from her than blows and blood, and he’s willing to hit below the belt to get it. He’ll fight her, but if he wins, she spends the night in his bed. All night long, his rules. No tapping out.

Mia agrees, certain that he’ll lose. What she doesn’t realize is that Tray loves to fight dirty…and that this match may end up being the most important one of their lives.

Meet the Author

USA Today bestselling author Cari Quinn wrote her first story—a bible parable—in 2nd grade, much to the delight of the nuns at her Catholic school. Once she saw the warm reception that first tale garnered, she was hooked. Now she gets to pen sexy romances for a living and routinely counts her lucky stars. When she’s not scribbling furiously, she can usually be found watching men’s college basketball, playing her music way too loud or causing trouble. Sometimes simultaneously.

    Just o.k.

I considered stopping, super slow read. Far fetched at times....just ok. I think that the seriousness of Mia's past were just undershadowed and not fully developed which left me feeling less than satisfied, her past deserved more consideration and time to invest in......

I liked the book. The storyline was different and loved the humor. Fox loved Mia with such intensity and I find that so appealing.

I don't know what to write about this book. It is not what I expected and I loved it!!
Mia has been through a horrible ordeal and it changed her.
Tray is trying to get out from under his family and be his own person.
I absolutely adored how he doesn't give her up on her and doesn't allow her to say no to him.
He does everything that he can to help her and show her that he cares.
They are both so used to fighting that it's like an aphrodisiac to them. It's HOT! ;)
I can't wait to read more in this series!

I had to put this one in the middle of the road for me. It took a while for me to get through it and the flow could have been a bit better with more conversation and acton and a little less inner monologue for my tastes. While I completely understand the characters, where they are coming from and why they are the way they are, I was never able to actually like them or connect with them in a way that would give them staying power in my mind. Mia's story is tragic and heartbreaking. She has literally been to hell as a child and when she fights her way out, there is no love or support system for her the be able to deal with what's left in her head on a constant basis. I can't imagine living like that into adulthood and keeping all those burdons on such young shoulders. Tray had his own issues in his family life, but seemingly much easier to grow and deal with. Mia and Tray find each other partially by chance. This is not your traditional love story, not is it your traditional fighter story. It's somewhere in between. They eventually earn the trust of one another, but a true discussion revealing past demons isn't had until the book was nearly over.
I really wanted to love it, but it's doubtful that I'll be able to remember it for long.

    Much more than MMA…

Mia Sheridan has been through hell in her young life and come back a fighter, literally in body and soul. To make a good amount of money to start a new life with her sister she wants to take on the best male MMA fighter but convincing him to fight her won’t be easy. She may have to give up more than she’s willing to give to get him to agree. She may just have to let him in behind the walls she’s created to protect herself which she is drawn to do by her attraction to him.

Tray Knox can’t believe a woman wants to fight him. When he realizes that she is tougher than she looks he is intrigued and the more he gets to know her, the more he sees her inner spirit, the more he wants more from her than just a fight. He’ll agree to this fight but on his terms while he works to change her mind about it. He is quite perceptive and understanding of her in ways she does not expect.

A female MMA fighter wanting to fight a male MMA fighter. That definitely caught this reader’s attention and this book did not disappoint. This was a great read with emotional depth and compelling characters with heart breaking histories. Her past is more devastating than his yet they each help other to overcome their darkness.  The chemistry and the emotions between the two were quite palpable, you felt things with them. It was sexy and suspenseful and kept this reader’s attention until the end.  Highly recommended if you don’t mind a darker read. I am looking forward to the next book in this series, that of Mia’s sister.

    A Powerful Romance

I took my time reading Shadowboxer so I could process the intense emotions that came with every chapter. And, let me tell you, the emotions are dark, raw, and gritty. Both Mia and Tray are running from pasts they'd rather forget--Mia more so than Tray. And they're both, perhaps unknowingly, fighting for self-acceptance and self-worth through MMA.

Cari is the queen of steam which means there are plenty of sex scenes, but each steamy encounter takes Mia and Tray's relationship to another level--each one building up trust and breaking down defenses.

If you love the underdog, broken heroines and heroes, redemption, desire, and finding the other half of your heart, then this book is for you.

(Fiona Apple's song Shadowboxer matches the tone of this book perfectly.)

    Can't wait for Carly's story.

Mia and Fox will own you by the end of this story. No lie. Eve

Mia and Fox will own you by the end of this story.

    No lie.

Every heartbreaking struggle, every impact from a punch, every drop of blood--all of it leads to an exceptional love story that suits the characters down to the bone. But it's not an easy love story, but I promise you it's worth the read.

This is a world of violence and poverty, laughter and love, honesty and the lies we tell ourselves to get through the day. This book hurtles through emotions like you're in the ring at a MMA fight. They both are sizing up the opponent, trying to break them down to their essential parts, and then trying to figure out how to pin them.

(And oh, did they pin each other. Whew! There is some supreme steam between these pages.)

But when they broke down each other's defenses they found something raw and beautiful.

Mia, a woman with a strong, disciplined body and a broken spirit.

Fox, the golden boy who's excelled at everything he's tried, but never allowed himself to actually believe in anything.

Together they are magic and pain and then finally...simply love.
