Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Cara Chancellor
New York City may be known for its night life, but most people who live there do not see the half of it. Demons, vampires, werewolves and other “downworlders” lurk beneath their very noses, recognizable only to each other and the shadowhunters—part angel, part human warriors—who protect humanity from becoming the downworlders’ prey. Up until a strange evening at a trendy night club, teenager Clary Fray was one of the unseeing “mundanes.” Since then, her mother has gone missing, she has been attacked by a demon and a handsome boy named Jace has brought her and her best friend Simon to The Institute, a training ground for shadowhunters. There, Clary learns her mother was a legendary demon hunter in her own right, and that it might be up to Clary to follow in her footsteps and find both her mother and a missing precious artifact. This heavily illustrated guide provides an easy-to-follow overview of the film version of “The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones,” complete with screen shots from the movie, movie quotes, short introductions of each character ,and explanations of the runes, weapons, downworlders, and strongholds that make up the “Mortal Instruments” universe. While its light narration does not make it an effective substitute for the novel behind the motion picture, this book likely will be enjoyed by fans of the movie who want to relive pivotal scenes and give deeper study to the runes and other lore involved. Reviewer: Cara Chancellor; Ages 14 up.
