PreS-Gr 1-- At the break of day, shadows come alive in everything around us--``Inside, outside, shadows are about.'' A delightfully lilting verse in one or two lines per page encourages young listeners to find these shadows, and perhaps create some of their own. Pastel shades highlight the realistic oil paintings that sweep across double-page spreads, drawing the eye and imagination into play immediately and complementing the action-filled text. This book's execution is a classic example of the best of the genre--word and illustration mesh completely, beyond a shadow of a doubt. The type is large and the text is manageable for primary-grade children. Early education teachers will want to have this available not only for its usefulness but also for its total attractiveness. Other books that share the same concept are Tana Hoban's Shadows and Reflections (Greenwillow, 1990), Frank Asch's Bear Shadow (S. & S., 1988), and the Goors' Shadows: Here, There, and Everywhere (Crowell, 1981). --Mary Lou Budd, Milford South Elementary School, OH
