Is this what they call dysfunctional? He thought to himself. Because if it is, I think my family really needs help!

John, seventeen year old son of Christina and Daniel, is an intellectually gifted young man who shows great promise as a pianist. Quiet by nature, John worries that his tendencies toward dramatic introspection might be interfering with his grasp of reality.

It all starts when John meets a mysterious girl, Casey, late one night while he is walking on the beach. Does she actually exist, or is she a part of an elaborate and very realistic dream? A second encounter between the two teenagers proves to be just as inconclusive. Was Casey real or an elusive product of John’s imagination? Gradually, John learns that the truth about Casey. All is directly related to the truth about a series of past tragic events that have plagued the Engstroms and the Lodge over the years. John recognizes the parallels between the terrible events from decades ago and a tragic event of his own immediate family less than two years ago.

When John decides to confront his parents with the truth about these events, it seems to be the only clear path toward acceptance, redemption, and healing. John never guessed that in his quest for honesty and understanding, the dramatic forces of guilt, blame and remorse would erupt with such fury.
