Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly - Publisher's Weekly
After a very slow first half, Saul ( Darkness , The God Project ) picks up the pace and delivers aword? tense, high-tech psychological suspense thriller. Ten-year-old genius Josh MacCallum is bored, lonely and almost always angry at his older, teasing classmates. After he attempts suicide, his frantic single mother jumps at the chance to enroll him in the Academy, a school for very gifted kids in Northern California. Run by aloof Dr. Engersol and matronly housemother HildieHildie not Hidie/eed , the school, which occupies an old mansion, offers Josh a friend in another `fellow genius' awk when describing a woman genius, Amy Carlson. Trouble surfaces when a 12-year-old kills himself, but calm returns as Hildie dispenses hugs and common sense. Soon after Josh and Amy are picked for an advanced ``seminar,'' Engersol and Hildie are revealed as nasty and the mad-scientist plot hurtles to a violent conclusion featuring dueling brains?? Josh and Amy's? unclear You're absolutely right but i'm afraid it will have to stand as is. I can't reach the reviewer, and altho I have the galley, connected to a mainframe computer. The novel's padded beginning and only serviceable prose are tolerable `lesser' implies comparison w greater flaws, not w virtues flaws in light of Saul's chilling conceit, Hildie's jarring comeuppance and a delightful final twist. 150,000 first printing. Totally Wicked

I remember searching through my school library in search of something that could hold my interest and keep me wanting more. Thats about the time i stubbled onto this book. Ever since i picked it up and read the first few pages i couldnt put it down it went with me everywhere and every chance i got i would read the book. This was the first John Saul that i had read and after i finished it i wanted more so i drove down to the bookstore and picked up 4 other John Saul books and since then i've only read his books. I love the way that he keeps the reader in suspense and wondering the whole time and just when you think you've figured it out he throws in another plot twist and then in the end you never would have guessed it would turn out the way it did. I say people read this book and other books by John Saul. I recomended this book to all my friends and they went to the library and checked it out and fell in love with the way John Saul writes. This is an extremly good book.

I holed up in my room and literally couldn't put it down! it was really good and i can honestly say that i will go out and buy more of his books if they are half as good as this one! I very much recommend it! the suspense and mind-blowing 'no pun intended' plots are incredible! :D

The Dark Within the Brightest of Minds

If you are thinking of reading this novel, then I suggest you give it a try. Filled with surprising twists and turns, Shadows immediately pull you into the darkened corridors of the Acadamy, and the even darker paths of the human mind. All this with a cast of characters no older than ten years old, tempted and swayed by those who should be wiser than they. How often are we able read a book like this?

    Fascinating!

This was my first John Saul at that was back in 1997. Also first book I fully read in English while being a foreign exchange student in the U.S. Since then, I have read all his books, am living here full time and cannot wait for his latest 'Perfect Nightmare' out this month. 'Shadows' is definitely one of his best books. I never put it down!

    Highly Recommended

The book I am reviewing is called 'Shadows' by John Saul. I found this book mind warping and hard to put down. This book was about realy young smart kids that go to a University. They live in dorms and some of them have a special class that deals with artificial intelligence. Kids turn up dead, assumed scuicide, but the truth of the story is revealed with multiple twists and never ending enjoyment.

A clever meld of Sci-Fi and Horror!

Although this one is not as intensively spine chilling as some of his other work, it definately belongs on the 'HORROR' shelf. This is my 7th Saul book and I'm on my way to get more.

    AWESOME!

I really liked this book. It was really interesting; so interesting that it only took me, seriously, two days to read the book. I couldn't put it down and it was a real page turner. In the end you have an idea whats going to happen, but how its going to happen is what keeps you reading. I love John Saul's books and would recommend any of them.

    Great!

I loved reading this book! It was suspensful, interesting, creative, terrifying...everything a good John Saul novel has. I found the plot INCREDIBLY original, very interesting, and just...great! I mean, I am not making this up. This book was the first- maybe second- John Saul book I ever read, and is still #1 on my list of my favorite John Saul books. I really recommend this to ANYone who likes an original story, a terrifying story, and a just plain great novel! I can't say enough good things about this book!

    Whooaaa!

This book is awesome! John Saul books are the best I,ve ever read! A certain suicide scene will raise the hairs on your neck(I'm not going to give away who it is.) I love how the kids act like real, normal kids. Read it, you won't regret it!

John Saul Can Write the Goosebumps off your Neck.

What an eerie transformation awaits those young, gifted children, and John Saul takes them through a bizarre, twisted tale of over the edge bio-ethics and does so in a way that's sure to knock the reader in the head for attention!

    Favorite Book So Far!!!

This book was my second book to read of John Saul's. I love books in the Horror genre, and I loved John Saul books. He is a great author and this book really great! I could come to terms with this book (especially the way Josh was treated. This was one of the best books I've read (between my two favorite authors, John Saul & Dean Koontz). You will absolutely love this book.

I read it in a week!

I am not a fast reader. I got this book and was not really sure how much I would get into it, even though I love Saul books. I just wasn't sure about the whole Artificial Intelligance thing. I could not put it down. I would go out to dinner with my family.. and there I was in the corner reading my book. It is an AWESOME story. You will not be disappointed.

A Tale of Eerily Mystifying Suspense

This being the first book by John Saul that I've read, I didn't expect much. But, after the first fifty pages I was hooked. Unlike what I had originally imagined,I could relate and understand the novel really well. The plot line hit home, and made that kind of artificial intelligence experimentation seem not so far off in the future. You know what some people say, 'If someone can dream it, it can be done!'

    HORRIFYING!

This book is definitely a 5+. I read it in two days after almost going to the ending for the outcome halfway through it because my heart was pounding. So glad I did not do that. SHADOWS is a must-read for John Saul fans and for first timers who enjoy the treasure of an excellent horror story.
