Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
When a narrative opens with the words "I'm dead," the reader generally accepts that come-hither, and Clark (Whispers of the Bayou) keeps up the pace set by a nighttime motorcycle ride in the opening scene of this Christian suspense novel. "Skip tracer" Anna Jensen, who finds missing people, must face her checkered past when she returns home to Pennsylvania's Amish country in order to find her vanished brother. Complicating the plot is a tale of missing jewels and complex personal histories; Clark has a lot going on, and not everything is equally successful. The end-game plot twist is surprising, though not completely convincing, and the romantic element is much less successful than the atmosphere of suspense and the intricate plotting. The religious element, present but not preachy, is natural in this tale of unfolding revelation. Clark weaves a web of characters and events that will draw in Christian suspense fans.

Romantic suspense keeps the thrills coming

Shadows of Lancaster County by Mindy Starns Clark if a suspense novel chockfull of twisting plots and unexpected discoveries. Anne Bailey has created a new life for herself in California. Far away from her childhood home in Lancaster County,Pennsylvania and from the crime that destroyed her future. When her brother Bobby disappears leaving behind pregnant wife Lydia and son Isaac, Anne sets out to find him. That quest sets her on a course that will unearth secrets about DNA, long-lost gems, and the Amish. I'm a huge fan of Clark's work, and in the hands of any other author, this story would have been overburdened by all of the different plotlines and twists, but she handles them deftly, keeping readers flying through the pages. There's a lot of info about genetic testing and gene therapy that end up pulling the various story threads together. Clark's novel will appeal to readers who love the growing genre of Amish lit, as well as romantic thriller fans.

    GREAT BOOK

I loved this book......it had a riveting storyline. Best of all she portrayed romance in a healthy way....not like other authors whom seem to think for romance they need to write practically porn.

    I Also Recommend:

Original, good suspense by Mindy Starns Clark.

If you want to learn more about the Amish people and their customs and read a good suspense novel at the same time, this story is for you. I didn't find this story as romantic as her previous novels -- the romance was more in the background because the heroine was hardly around the love of her life for most of the book.

is an exciting Christian investigative suspense thriller

Although she still suffers nightmares, she felt she paid her dues a long time ago when she left her Dreiheit, Pennsylvania Dutch home for California. Anna Bailey changed her name from Annalise Jenson and became a skip tracer. However, the call from her sister-in-law Lydia Jenson changes all that. Anna¿s brother Bobby, the only person back in Amish country who had her phone number gave it to his wife last night telling her to use it if something happens; Bobby is missing.

Anna agrees to come home to search for Bobby although she ruefully knows her ¿J¿accuse¿ past will surface in living color. In Dreiheit, Anna investigates the clues of her sibling¿s disappearance and soon links him to missing rubies. As she gets closer to the truth of what happened to Bobby and the treasure, her fears grow that he is dead and if she survives somehow this time fleeing to the West Coast may not be stabling enough for her; however this time also there is Remy Villefranche and especially Reed Thornton.

This is an exciting Christian investigative suspense thriller that hooks the audience with the shocking opening proclamation, a terrific story line and a fabulous final twist. The story is fast-paced from the moment Anna knows Annalise is coming home and never slows down as she conducts her inquiry. Although the romantic subplot feels a bit forced, Mindy Starns Clark provides her grateful audience with a strong tale of redemption with deliverance from a fabrication by the more powerful.

    I Also Recommend:

    Wonderful mystery/suspense. Perfectly done!

I dare say I have discovered the perfect suspense/mystery novel today when I finished Shadows of Lancaster County by Mindy Starns Clark.

Phenomenal. Intelligent. Masterful. Complex. Amazingly well-written, and full of intrigue. These are a few of the things that come to mind as I reflect on the mystery/suspense aspects of the story. The entire novel was edge-of-your-seat suspense, but there was also a very complex and believeable plot that thankfully didn't insult my intelligence. By that I mean it was easy to follow but brilliantly plotted. I learned a lot while putting the pieces of the mystery puzzle together.

And the red herrings actually worked! Plus, the "surprise" at the end was totally believable, which is often not the case. Sheesh, I don't even like mysteries or suspense novels all that much but even I was riveted to the text. The romantic element was pleasurable, too. This was simply an incredible story that captivated me from start to finish. It's going to make my best fiction list, too. I've been fortunate with my reading selections as of late. Those I finish, anyway.

One final note. I love it when I am so into a story that even I don't know who to trust. Did I mention this was an incredible story? It's one not to miss.
