Addy, an eleven-year old escaped slave from a North Carolina plantation living free with her family, finds prejudice in Society Hill, the richest part of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Addy saves the life of Mr. Albert Radisson, a famous architect, and he in turn offers Addy's father a job as a carpenter. He also gives them a nice home behind his aristocratic mansion. Addy and her family are thrilled to have found such good fortune. A mysterious stranger from a secret room in Mr. Radisson's mansion appears at night and befriends Addy because she needs her help to survive. Mr. Radisson's scornful and prejudicial mother accuses Addy of stealing food, bread, and finally a jeweled necklace from the mansion. Mr. Radisson's fiance, who had been friendly to Addy and her mother, suddenly turns cold at the sight of Abby's protection stone, made by her old Uncle Solomon. She stops all association with Addy's family, siding with her future mother-in-law, and insists that Addy and her family be sent away. The stranger, a black woman who served as a Union spy, teaches Abby to seek answers in riddles, as a spy would. Addy solves the riddle and discovers the secret Mr. Radisson's fiance is harboring. When all is revealed, Addy and her family are not turned out of their new home.

Gr 4-7 - In this suspenseful mystery set in Philadelphia during the Reconstruction era, 11-year-old African-American Addy Walker saves the wealthy architect Albert Radisson from a runaway horse as her father works nearby. Radisson is grateful, notices her father's carpentry talents, and not only offers him a job, but also housing for their family in the servants' quarters on his estate. While Radisson's late father was known as an abolitionist, his mother is not of the same mind, and is quite hostile to the Walkers. When the man's fiancée, Elizabeth, comes to town to prepare for their wedding, she is kind and generous but then she suddenly turns against Addy and accuses her of stealing a necklace. Addy discovers the reason for this change of heart, and also solves the mystery of a shadowy stranger who is hiding in the house. Addy and her family experience many verbal assaults from white people they encounter, and the tensions of this era are clearly and honestly depicted. Coleman is faithful to the characters and settings in Connie Porter's "Addy" books (American Girl), and provides an enjoyable and informative mystery.-Laura Scott, Farmington Community Library, MI

    A Promising Read For Any Girl Who Loves Mystery And Suspense

    Shadows on Society Hill written by Evelyn Coleman is an American Girl mystery. The mystery is about a girl named Addy, who is an eleven year- old ex-slave living with her family after the Civil War. This book is full of mystery, drama, and twists and turns. It is a mystery book you won't forget anytime soon. Addy Walker and her family are now free, after the war, but are still struggling with money. Addy's father is looking for a decent job, and decides to take Addy with him whe he is going to try to get a job at a company called Milner's Builders. Over there, Addy saves a man named Mr. Albert Radisson from being run over by a horse. Mr. Radisson is thankful that Addy saved him from being run over, so he offers Addy a reward, but Addy refuses. Mr. Radisson happens to look over at what Addy's father is building as a test for Milner's Builders and asks Addy's father, if Addy's father could work for him. Addy's father accepts, but the new job also comes with a brand-new house for Addy and her family which once belonged to the Radisson family's previous servants. The house is lovely and spacious and the Walker family is happy to be living there. But the Radisson property also comes with many secrets and unexplained happenings. When Addy goes to bed, she sees a light from the Radissons' front porch. Addy is determined to get to the bottom of things, but new problems arise. Mr. Radisson's mother comes to stay for her son's wedding, and when things start to go missing, she thinks the Walker family is stealing these things. Mr. Radisson's fianc'ee, Miss Elizabeth Waring Cope, comes to stay too. At first, Miss Elizabeth is the kindest, nicest person Addy has ever met. But slowly, Miss Elizabeth's kindness changes, and she also thinks Addy is stealing her things. On top of that, Addy discovers an immense secret no one else knows about yet. Addy is determined to find out what is really happening, and she finds herself in a maze of mystery and confusion that she has to solve and get through. This book is an entertaining read for any girl who loves mystery, drama, riddles, and American Girl. This book kept me reading for a long time, and I know it will be the same for other girls who read this book. Five stars to Evelyn Coleman and American Girl for this book, and I hope you enjoy the book just as much as I did!!!!!!!!

    Mystery Miss.

    This Addy mystery is intriguing and will capture young readers' imagination. Addy witnesses some strange occurrences, yet she wonders if her mind is playing tricks on her because no one else seems to see what she sees. As this tale develops readers will be held in suspense and surrounded by the mystery of a person slipping in and out of the main house near Addy's home. Who is this "ghost" Addy encounters? What does the "ghost" want or need? How does the "ghost" think Addy will be of assistance? If you are intrigued, read this novel and solve the mystery of the Shadows on Society Hill and "see" the truth unfold. Enjoy!

    BEST MYSTERY EVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    This book is so mysterious and has so many unexpected twists and turns, and what an ending it was! If you read this book, it will be the best mystery you could ever read, especially for those Addy fans!!!!!
