Shadows over Paradiseby Anne K. Edwards
Shadows Over Paradise is the story of complicated characters intent on achieving their own ends, some heedless of the cost to others. Action and tension blended with a brooding house set on a volcanic island with soaring cliffs and few modern amenities, along with turbulent emotions offer a perfect catalyst for the storm that is about to break over the Mantuan Islands.

Julia’s been invited to her friend’s wedding on an exotic island but nothing seems to go right in Anne K. Edwards’ Shadows over Paradise. Even the boatman on the way to this island paradise says Julia shouldn’t be there. Still, the location’s great, the people are full of character, and, being a writer, Julia’s sure she’ll build a wonderful mystery novel from the experience. Meanwhile she’s living a mystery of her own. The main character’s attention to detail fills this novel with well-observed imagery, bringing all the senses into play. Scenes are richly portrayed, from sandy beach to cliff side trail to stores on the wrong side of town, and the scent of badly brewed coffee makes me long for a decent cup. Julia imagines backgrounds and lives for the people she observes, while events gradually appraise the reader of who’s related to whom. There’s a pleasing uncertainty about who the good guys are and who can be trusted. Blended families, shifting alliances, and past and future deaths color the tale. Loyalties are tested, but Julia plows on with fierce determination to see things through to the best conclusion. An exciting ending is filled with fear and adventure plus the saving hands of good timing and true love. While I guessed some of what was going on, I certainly didn’t guess it all, but I might avoid island paradises after this tale. Disclosure: I was sent an ecopy of this novel in exchange for my honest review.
Shadows Over Paradise grabs the reader from the very first. By Anne K. Edwards' wonderfully descriptive prose, I was transported to the Mantuan Islands in the Pacific. I could inhale the salty sea air and feel the pitch of the small fishing boat as main character Julia Graye braves the elements to attend her college friend's wedding. However, this island paradise holds a dangerous secret. The boat's captain advises Julia right at the start that she should turn around and go home. This warning builds the suspense and from there, the menace keeps growing. Julia encounters an assortment of characters with a variety of hidden agendas. Her defiance in face of the odds against her and her determination to survive add to this tightly woven tale. A highly enjoyable read.
