Barnes & Noble - Steve Klinge
The CBS miniseries SHAKE, RATTLE & ROLL follows the lovestruck members of a fictional band, the HartAches, as they conveniently mirror the evolution of rock 'n' roll from 1955 to 1963. This soundtrack of mostly new recordings juxtaposes classics recreated by current artists the Mighty Mighty Bosstones' Dicky Barrett and Semisonic's Dan Wilson team up for the title track; Blink-182's Mark Hoppus and Tom DeLonge cover Jan & Dean's "Dead Man's Curve" with new originals, some of which were written by major songwriters of the early rock 'n' roll era. Lamont Dozier, Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller, and Graham Nash all contribute to tracks for the HartAches; Carole King ...

Lamont Dozier, Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller, and Graham Nash all contribute to tracks for the HartAches; Carole King wrote a girl-group song that Chante Moore shines on; Bob Dylan's "Fur Slippers" -- a song he wrote for his album STREET LEGAL but never released -- becomes a blues showcase for B.B. King and winds up one of the album's highlights. As revisionist rock 'n' roll history, these "new" songs are fascinating studies. The HartAches as performers, however, aren't much different from the Stray Cats: Although enjoyable enough as a recreation, they can't equal the youthful abandon and joyous revelation of the bands they aim to mimic for the real thing, you might go to Rhino's LOUD, FAST & OUT OF CONTROL box or even the AMERICAN GRAFFITI soundtrack. Still, it's fun to hear Terence Trent D'Arby channel Jackie Wilson, or K-Ci & JoJo, Jesse Powell, and Rahsaan Patterson sing doo-wop. Like B.B. King and Chante Moore, these artists appropriate the forms of the past without getting lost in the cliches.
All Music Guide - Heather Phares
The soundtrack to CBS TV's miniseries Shake Rattle and Roll celebrates rock & roll's multigenerational appeal. Modern-day artists like Blink 182, Terence Trent D'Arby, K-Ci & Jo-Jo, Chante Moore, Rashaan Patterson, and Dicky Barrett of the Mighty Mighty Bosstones perform early rock classics like "Long Tall Sally" and "Ain't That a Shame." The miniseries tells the story of the HartAches, and six of the group's songs are included on the album, including "Detour," "Side by Side," "One Bad Stud," and "Baby, Here I Am." Dicky Barrett performs the title track; Blink 182 covers "Dead Man's Curve"; and K-Ci & Jo-Jo, Jesse Powell, and Rashaan Patterson perform "Tears on My Pillow" as the Velvet 4. Original oldies like the Platters' "Only You" and the Chords' "Sh-Boom" add to the soundtrack's authenticity.
