School Library Journal

This book centers on the idea of using one song as the jumping-off point for a thematic storytime. Each program features two to three picture books that support the theme, along with one or two movement activities. There's also a "backup picture book" listed as well as more related songs. The structure is quite fluid. Sometimes Reid starts off with an opening activity to spark imaginations or build enthusiasm for what's to come. Other times, a poem or flannel-board patterns are included. Many of the movement activities are originals or traditional songs that Reid has adapted, such as "Happy Birthday in Cow" from the "Home on the Range" program. A "Performer Profile" at the end of each program includes a brief biographical sketch, recordings, and Web site. The featured songs are listed within the programs, where recordings can be found, and are also printed at the end of the chapter with suggested guitar chords. The themes run the gamut from seasonal, to various animals and their environments, to pretend activities and emotions. This volume will spark creativity and imagination.-Jane Marino, Great Neck Library, NY
