Overview

Greatest-hits albums are a traditional way of buying time for artists between albums. Peter Gabriel's, entitled Shaking the Tree: Sixteen Golden Greats, arrived in December of 1990, as he was toiling away at the follow-up to his smash So, which was four years old at that point. As greatest-hits albums go, it's pretty good, containing all the hits, plus an effective re-recording of "Here Comes the Flood" and a good new song in the form of the title track. While the sequencing may leave something to be desired -- it is neither chronological, nor as supple as a good mix tape -- it does contain nearly everything a casual fan could want (nothing from the second album, though; both "On the Air" or "D.I.Y." would have been nice additions), making it an effective sampler.

Shaking The Tree: Sixteen Golden Greats: Before The Fall When this 1991 compilation came out, no one would have believed that, as of 2015, only two Peter Gabriel CDs of new songs would have been issued since its release. Is it writer's block, withdrawal, or something else? No one has a satisfactory explanation. Now, to the business at hand. Should you buy this or the newer Hit 2 CD comp? Almost all of the tracks on this CD are on Hit. On the other hand, Hit is padded with a lot of rare and movie soundtrack songs. I vote for Shaking The Tree. It is almost 80 minutes of prime Gabriel. Look at the highlights that are favorites of mine. You get PG's first solo hit, Solsbury Hill; the creepy assassin's manifesto Family Snapshot; the mournful Mercy Street; the death song of an Indian medicine man, San Jacinto; the apocalyptic Red Rain; the stardom send-up Big Time; and finally, the classic protest anthem Biko. The only number that doesn't really fit is Zaar from the Passion soundtrack. It should be heard as part of that project. I give this set 4 ½ stars.
