Imagine a diet that's as easy as "a spoonful of sugar" (or extra-light olive oil) twice a day. A diet that actually reduces appetite and cravings. A diet that's based on a wealth of scientific findings but is simple enough for anyone to stick to. A diet with results that amaze almost everyone who tries it.

Psychology professor Seth Roberts asks a simple question most weight-loss experts haven't thought to tackle: What makes people hungry? Based on a new understanding of how the human body regulates hunger, The Shangri-La Diet presents a strikingly simple and surprisingly effective way to lose weight-without giving up favorite foods.

Simple and counterintuitive, this extraordinary new diet is changing the way the world thinks about weight loss-one success story at a time.

Editorial Reviews

Psychologist Dr. Seth Roberts wondered why most diets don't work. For ten years, he analyzed the problem, poring over current scientific research and using himself as a guinea pig to test rival theories. Finally, he came up with a solution that sounds counterintuitive but simple. By taking two mid-meal servings of extra-light olive oil or simple sugar water, he took control of his body's appetite thermostat, and in three months, he lost 35 pounds. A radical way of dealing with a common midriff problem.

This isn't really a diet. Rather than give you a new way to eat fewer calories and exercise more that will work for 3-4 weeks and then leave you rebounding, this is a method for moving your set point. The food choices are left to you. Much like 'diet' foods have been shown to cause people to gain weight (flavor without calories causes the body to move the set point up), calories without flavor drive the set point down. The 'diet' is a method for figuring out how many calories you need and when to take them for the concept to have a practical, real impact on your life. I started at 240 pounds. I was 186 this morning with my wife watching me weigh in. Since I started, with feedback from experiments, Seth Roberts has tweaked and improved the methods, and made them easier (I was taking in two liters of water a day to dilute the flavor of the calories -- turns out that wasn't necessary, which was figured out after I'd been at it a month or so, wish everyone had known that then). Well worth a read. I've given away a lot of copies of the book to friends and family because it works.
