Like a number of bootleg releases before it, this legit release from Koch features songs sampled by a particular group or producer -- in this case, RZA -- and provides an indispensable accessory to the group or producer's discography proper, in addition to providing unique insight for fans, whether it involves hearing the origin of a break, a piano lick, or merely a spoken bit. From project to project, RZA has always gone back to late-'60s and early-'70s soul, favoring raw over slick and grit over gloss, which this disc emphasizes especially the producer's affinity for the Hi label. Few of the songs presented here were sampled on RZA productions after the mid-'90s, so this should all be familiar to fans of the first two Wu-Tang albums and the initial round of the group members' solo releases, and even soul fans with no appreciation of hip-hop will find at least a few things to enjoy. Not many chart-toppers are here, but RZA has had a fantastic ear for picking up on useful, less-recognized tracks with lasting value. Highlights include Willie Mitchell's instrumental version of the Rascals' "Groovin" the snip of jutting guitar can be heard looped throughout GZA's "Liquid Swords", the New Birth's "Honeybee" the opening swarm of bees and spare bassline made to sound all the more ominous in Wu-Tang's "Clan in da Front", and the live version of Donny Hathaway's "Little Ghetto Boy" used to ghostly effect in Wu-Tang Forever's "Little Ghetto Boys". The detailed liners from Wax Poetics magazine's Andrew "Monk" Mason are a plus.
