Overview

The acclaimed bluegrass vocalist Lynn Morris could hold all the attention on any of her albums, but she wisely also features the talented members of her tight ensemble. Her husband, bassist and singer Marshall Wilborn, as well as multi-instrumentalist (banjo, mandolin, guitar, and fiddle) Ron Stewart and mandolinist Jesse Brock are highlighted throughout Shape of a Tear. Still, it’s Morris’s clear, heartfelt vocals that draw us in. This award-winning performer, a perennial favorite on the bluegrass circuit, also knows how to find material that plays up her many strengths. Here, songs by Nanci Griffith, the Louvin Brothers, Buck Owens, and others are given revamped, yet spot-on, interpretations. (One of Wilborn’s features recasts Hank Williams’s “Move It On Over.”) Wilborn also contributes two strong originals, “I’ll Take Them with Me” and “Goodby to the Blues.” Special guests, including mandolinist Rob Ickes and guitarist Junior Brown, add extra dimension to an already robust recording.
