Editorial Reviews

From Barnes & Noble

Author Natsuno Hiraiwa began as a graphic designer, but her passion for fashion transformed her into a style creator. Like an origami artist working in fabric, she creates blouses, top, skirts, and other cloth items that drape and fasten in multiple ways. Her new Shape Shape promises to increase the size of your wardrobe and also expand your imagination.

Michelle Marozik

Publishers Weekly
Another Japanese import from Interweave, this small volume is as carefully styled and designed as readers have come to expect from the publishing company. The book is really a capsule collection from designer Hiraiwa, complete with a pattern packet in the back pocket so they can sew the drape-y Eileen Fisher-esque styles included. From draw-string low-waist pants to a Two-Way Stole so complex that photos show how to put it on, there are 20 designs, made up in mostly solid linens. For those who love this aesthetic, a combination of the minimal and artsy, the book is a must-buy, but a few caveats: while there are numerous diagrams to show how to sew up the projects, they are tiny and packed with numbers (both metric and American measurements). Also, the designs are clearly sized for the typical Japanese woman, smaller than Americans (bust sizes range from 32 inches to 36 inches), and no basic sewing instructions are included. This isn't for new sewists, but it's a lovely, cohesive set of patterns. Color photos.

This book is advertised as "Sewing Clothing Patterns".

This book is advertised as "Sewing Clothing Patterns". Most of the items in the book are accessories, not garments. And of those that are garments, not all that inspired or wearable by "real people". Seriously, who needs gangster pants? Will you really wear a mini apron over leggings to the office?

The 'patterns' all come on two sheets of paper. All drawn with the exact same lines - no color, no variations in weight or texture of the lines. Extremely confusing. Best to get to a B&N store & take a good look before investing if you expect to actually use this book. If you only want to look at the pretty pictures, and see some novel ideas, then purchase away.

I'm not fond of anything that misrepresents itself and this does. Not many actual pieces of clothing (mostly scarves & vests - aka Accessories) and the patterns are a joke for even the most experienced seamstress.

Terrific! My girlfriends are all passing it around... I've told them to get their own copy!

This book is great in so many ways: - Beautifully organized. - Illustrations are great. - Directions are simple, straightforward, & nicely illustrated. - Patterns will be helpful. How to make better? More, more, more patterns!! Look forward to volume 2!

    Fun stuff to make.

Cute clothes that are not too difficult for a sewer with moderate skills. I am particularly interested in making the twisty blouse out of silk chiffon. A lot of the shapes are for young slim people but could be worn by a variety of shapes and sizes with the right amount of editing and styling. Love the sparseness of the Japanese photography and the graphs for pattern making and layouts as well as the construction drawings are very detailed. Very modern and fun to wear. Included patterns are a major plus.
