Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher
"Dino fans will be delighted with this series." - School Library Journal
Children's Literature - Marilyn Courtot
One of kids' favorite creatures (dinosaurs) is the focus of this series of books aimed at teaching basics such as counting, shapes, colors and the alphabet. In Shapeasaurus, a red Tyrannosaurus Rex is featured on the cover. Since no one really knows the colors of various dinosaurs, the artist has used a colorful palette in depicting the various dinosaurs and other creatures that lived during the age of dinosaurs. On the first spread a Tyrannosaurus Rex is hatching from an oval egg and is joined by two siblings all different colors. They see the sun, which is a bright yellow circle, and they rest on square rocks (a bit of a stretch here) and hide from a Velociraptor with is dangerous crescent-shaped claws. As they wander about they see a Stegosaurus with its diamond shaped backplates and they run from a cone shaped volcano that is starting to spew smoke. At night they see stars in the sky. Suddenly these dinosaurs have grown up and they are on the hunt for a Triceratops with its square teeth munching on some grass. There is no further explanation but we do see the Tyrannosauruses munching on some bones with their fierce triangular-shaped teeth. The last page ends with the three dinosaurs watching the eggs in their nests as another batch of these creatures is about to enter the world. The complicated dinosaur names will be quickly learned and one hopes that the shapes will also become part of the young listener/reader's knowledge. Other available titles include Alphasaurus, Colorasaurus, and Countasaurus. Reviewer: Marilyn Courtot

PreS—Each of these concept books has colorful spreads of nonthreatening creatures in a prehistoric environment. Alphasaurus features 26 alliterative sentences that introduce dinos from A to Z. For example, "I is for Iguanodon,/impolitely ignoring an inchworm." Colorasaurus depicts the world of the dinosaurs with an emphasis on their environment, such as red lava, an orange sun, black tar, and the yellow sand of the dunes. Countasaurus leads youngsters as they count from 1 to 10 with the help of several dinosaur models. In Shapeasaurus, three very brightly colored Tyrannosauruses hatch from oval eggs. Over the next pages, these youngsters explore their world, from the circular sun to the dangerous crescent claws of a hunting Velociraptor. Endearing as the illustrations are, readers won't forget how dangerous these lizards were when the next page reveals the Tyrannosauruses' triangular teeth gnawing on bones. The book comes full circle as the three are fully grown waiting for their eggs to hatch. Dino fans will be delighted with this series.—Laura Butler, Mount Laurel Library, NJ
