Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Children's Literature
One in a series of nine "Science Factory" books, this one deals with elements of physics, and is designed for older elementary students. Using colored photographs and step-by-step instructions, readers are led through a series of twelve experiments, most using common household materials. For instance, there is an experiment which tests why some shapes, like a tube, are stronger in one direction than the other. Lists of materials needed are provided for each experiment as well as instructions, and important reasons why the physics principle works. While a highly motivated child could conduct the experiments, the book seems more useful for a teacher or other adult to use to illustrate various scientific principles with student help. There are additional physics principles included, as well as an index. 2000, Copper Beech Books, Ages 8 to 10, $21.90. Reviewer: Meredith Kiger
