Children's Literature - Marilyn Courtot
Among the things that kids should know and be able to name before entering kindergarten are basic shapes. This "Rookie Toddler" series title focuses on shapes and it does indeed provide the basics. The four major shapes are featured on the cover with a 3-D look and in bright colors. The tabbed edges entice kids to try turning the pages. The big red circle on the first spread is shown as part of a tricycle. The green square is featured in a toy block, while the blue triangle appears on the nose of a jack-o'-lantern. The yellow rectangle is identified as the inviting front door of the house. A purple diamond becomes a road sign. Shapes, colors and a practical presentation of items toddlers would encounter make this board book an appealing offering. The final spread asks readers to identify the shapes and also provides tips to adults about extending the lesson. For example, as one goes around the house, turn it into a shape hunt. As the back cover states "Colorful photos of familiar objects make it easy for your toddler to learn about shapes." Reviewer: Marilyn Courtot
