Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
In the small town of Shapesville, diversity is celebrated. Five friends share with the reader their shape, size, color, talent, and uniqueness. They talk about taking care of their bodies through healthy eating and exercise. They send the message to young children to be proud of who you are and what you believe in. They convey the idea that what is important is what is in your heart. This book covers a lot of territory. It could be used in the classroom to cover a broad spectrum of the curriculum such as shapes and their attributes, personal health and good self-esteem, to name a few. The characters are endearing, their interests varied. "Sam, the blue square—he's a rock star," or "Robbie the rectangle—he's an artistic star." The discussion questions at the end of the story provide an excellent avenue for conversation about good self-image and understanding differences. The illustrations are bright and unusual. A clever, busy book and its possibilities are endless. 2003, Gurze Books, Ages 4 to 7.

Meet the Author

Remarkably, the three co-authors are recent graduates from small Kenyon College in Gambier, OH, where they wrote Shapesville as an independent study project. Finding a publisher for their book defied millions to one odds! Andy Mills and Becky Osborn received their B.A. degrees in Psychology, and Erica Neitz, the illustator, graduated with a B.A. in Art. All of them will be actively marketing the book.
