Overview

They were asleep for 572 years...

Shard Mountain is an epic science-fiction fantasy novel set in a distant post-apocalypse future America.

Three young men involved in a highway accident are surprised to wake up not in a hospital, but in a dark underground tomb, five-hundred years in the future.

They emerge to discover a world completely unlike anything they knew, where bizarre mutations are common among people and wildlife, and scraps of futuristic technology are dug from the ground like ancient buried treasure.

They will have to learn to survive in this dangerous new world, and to unravel the mystery of what happened while they slept, to discover why they would be categorized as something other than human beings.

What can I say...the book was LONG even on an Ereader..but I wanted more more more...The way it was written kept my interest..Waht a wonderful world Mr. Mitchell has created. I am wondering when the next installment is. I only hope he is able to answer some questions like...Does Charles get married...what about the deal with the Prevens...I also liked the trips to Sgard Mountain to scavange and then figuring out what the darn things do. I did not like the emphasis of all the drug use...U would think after 5600 years they would catch on that drugs are one of the things that is the downfall of our society now. I do like the fact Unyon is "Drug Free" except for when the authorities "look the other way" Some things just do not change even after 500 years...and they have cars...what about the Geroge jetson type vehicles...Mr. Mitchell please let us know when the follow up book is comeing. Thanks for a GREAT read.

The story started out with promise but the book ends up beating the reader over the head with repetitious phrases and characters without personality. Maybe it's the constant drug use, but really these people are so poorly fleshed out they're practically interchangeable. There's no tension or dynamism to be found in their interaction, so there's no tension or even interest in their lives. Frankly, i cared so little about these cartoony people that i gave up. I feel let down because the author's premise was fun and the detail in his world - though highly implausible - was intricate and imaginative. But the author wasn't able to engage me with his charaters, and scenes that should've been filled with high tension just came across as silly. A good editor could've tightened up the prose, cleaned up some of more egregious spelling and grammar issues, helped differentiate between characters and made them less cartoony, and cut about 1/3 of the book's length by pruning the repetitive sections. Now that would be a fun book!
