The result of each battle depends on the setting. Shark wins at high diving, not surprisingly, while Train comes out on top when it comes to burping. Other face-offs are less immediately obvious: Train stretches vertically to triumph at basketball, while Shark's sharp-toothed clown costume works best for trick-or-treating. In some situations, neither combatant fares well: as Train comments on the scoreless video-game competition, "Sure would help if we had thumbs." The cleverly chosen contests reflect the imaginative powers of kids while retaining the consistent logic that's also essential to play. The notion of a shark and a train trying to be quiet in a library is absurd, for example, but the reasons why neither would succeed make perfect sense. Energetic cartoon illustrations take full advantage of the visual possibilities. Creative use of page space and perspectives gives a fresh look to each new battle. Just-right facial expressions capture the distinct personalities of the two competitors, including an evil grin from Shark at the Ping-Pong table and Train's uneasy look during a disastrous piano recital. This is a genius concept—the kids' equivalent of a classic guy bull session, centering on two playmates' favorite toys. So, who's better—Shark or Train? That all depends. When trick-or-treating, Shark is the clear winner, thanks to his intimidating smile (“The clown is very hungry,” he says, as a bowl of candy is poured into his bag). But in a marshmallow-roasting contest, Train triumphs by virtue of his built-in, coal-stoked rotisserie. Just when readers will think the scenarios can't get more absurd (bowling, a burping contest), the book moves into even funnier territory: hypotheticals in which neither comes out on top (their imposing presences make them ripe targets for getting shushed in a library, and their lack of opposable thumbs means neither is very good at video games). Lichtenheld's (Duck! Rabbit!) watercolor cartoons have a fluidity and goofy intensity that recalls Mad magazine, while Barton (The Day-Glo Brothers) gives the characters snappy dialogue throughout. “That counts as a strike, right?” says Shark, having eaten an entire lane of bowling pins. “This is why you guys have a bad reputation,” retorts Train. With two boys at a toy chest, one clutching a shark and the other a train, thus begins the most unlikeliest of competitions. Who will win-shark or train? Well, it does depend on the situation. If underwater, the shark will surely triumph. But at roasting marshmallows? The train beats the shark's soggy mess every time. From one wacky circumstance to the next, from bowling to hot-air ballooning, there is always a clear winner. Until, suddenly, there is not. Both the shark and the train are not very good at playing hide and seek. They also stink at video games ("Sure would help if we had thumbs"). Just when the competitors can't bear it any longer, it's time for lunch. The boys toss them carelessly aside-until next time, that is. Lichtenheld's snarling shark and grimacing train are definitely ready for a fight, and his scenarios gleefully play up the absurdity. The combatants' expressions are priceless when they lose.     More Fun Than You Usually Find Between the Covers

    Gosh, this book is THE book I would give as a gift to a young boy right now. It's as good as Mini Grey's Traction Man in its understanding of the adolescent imagination. A shark and a locomotive face-off in a series of far-fetched, hilarious competitions -- playing the piano, roasting marshmallows, pie-eating, burping, going off the high dive. (Additional comic details are provided by the train's poor caboose, which is getting an unfair share of the abuse by virtue of its location.) It's pure solid-gold silliness, a book that could make a boy understand how much fun stories can be.

    A note to the reader: If I were sharing this with a child for the first time, I would skip the front matter and start the story on the title page.(The first two illustrations, before the title page, reveal that the shark and the train are toys, wielded by two playmates.) If you skip to the title page the ending -- with the boys called to lunch -- is a delightful surprise.

    My son was rolling in the floor- great choice

    We picked this book as a summer read for him. He loved it and read it twice in a row. He shows anyone who will listen the page about the library and laughs hysterically. Look forward to more like this.

    My son sleeps with this book

    Love this book. My train-crazy 4 year-old just giggles with delight. And is there anything better than reading to your child and listening to his/her ticked funny-bone turn into a gaggle of giggles? Our favorite part is the carnival page where tickets for the train ride are $1.00 and there is a line of kids waiting and riding. And the poor shark is in an above-ground pool all alone; his rides have been marked down from a $1.00 to free...and the sign says - "You must be this --> crazy to ride this ride." Hilarious for mom & dad and kids.

    LOVE this book!

    This has got to be my son's all time favorite book right now. He loves trains and sharks so I knew this would be a winner in our home. It is funny and creative and we all love it!

    Where are the games?

    Kids love it

    I got this book for my 6 and 4 yr olds for their Nook Tablets. They absolutely love it. I highly recommend.

    Who will win - Shark or Train??!! You MUST read this hilarious book to find out...

    Shark vs. Train is an entertaining tale about what happens when one young boy finds a toy shark in the toy box and another young boy finds a toy train. This begins a battle royale with a series of amusing face-offs. Who will win in the ocean? Shark, of course. Who will win on the railroad tracks? Another predictable one. But the fun begins when author Chris Barton's inquiries start to get more unusual: who will run a better lemonade stand? Apparently Train, because Shark can't compete with a lemonade tank! And how about Trick or Treating, who will triumph in that activity? Clearly Shark will and he doesn't even need much of a costume to scare all the treats right out of the bowl and into his bag. This amusing book will delight young children. The humor is sophisticated and clever enough to entertain both parent and child. It's a celebration of imagination. The illustrations are terrific, as well. Adults reading this book: take a look at the spread of the shark trying to jump the cars, one actually has the words A. Fonzarelli Leather Co. on it. What a funny take on the Happy Days "Jump the Shark" episode!

    Okay

    My kids like it okay but it's not very story like just saying like who would win shark or train.... my 3 year old was into it as much as I would have thought, I think he just did not get it, but my 5 year old liked it and thought it was funny. It was fun on the Nook because of the sounds and animation.

    I was disappointed with this book. The story itself is cute....

    I was disappointed with this book. The story itself is cute....but it claims to be a read and play book which is why I purchased it. There are no star pages. I am still looking to find out who I can complain to, it should be labeled read-to-me not read and play...

    This is the first "read and play" book we have gotten

    This is the first "read and play" book we have gotten that had no special "play" pages in it. The story IS funny, but when I said it was a "read and play" book, the children were extremely disappointed to discover that, unlike every other "play" book we have gotten, there were no specific play pages included. Having some small animation on the page does not consitiute a "play" page as far as the children are concerned. Perhaps there needs to be a different category for books like this that do not contain real "play" pages. As it stands, this is an extremely disappointing reading experience.
