Overview

Gray is already bigger than all the other sharks in his clan, or shiver. He can’t stop growing, and when his hunger gets him into trouble, he’s banished from the reef. Luckily his best friend Barkley comes with him…but their hunt for food forces them to journey deep into the dangerous Big Blue.

Then Gray and Barkley accidentally swim into Goblin Shiver territory. They have no choice but to join the shiver. They’ll help fight against the rival sharks of Razor Shiver in return for training, protection, and food. But who can Gray and Barkley trust when the ocean is full of slippery fish and one mistake means you’re someone else’s dinner?

Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Judy Crowder
Gray is an adolescent (in every sense of the word) reef shark with problems. First, he is big—really big—and growing bigger than all the sharks in and around his reef home. Fast growth means constant hunger and his hunting for food has gotten him into trouble before. Second, he is immature, impulsive, reckless, sarcastic, self-centered, short-sighted, and lacks common sense. He is convinced he is cool, a "big fin," not a "flipper," not large but "big-cartilaged." He thinks nothing of calling his only friend (side kick?), Barkley, a dogfish shark, "codface," and regards other reef dwellers with disdain. Of course, all this gets him into so much trouble that he is banished from the reef and must venture out into the "big blue" to live on his own. He soon gets mixed up in wars between the shivers or shark groups—Sharks vs. Jets, sans dancing. If Gray's huge size gains him entry into the best shivers, does his attitude hinder him? While fans of talking animal stories may enjoy the book, consider this: the sharks in this book are hardly based on science. Sharks do not "glide to a stop" nor do they float. Sharks must swim constantly to live. While they do eat fish of all kinds, they do not go on annual "tuna runs." Sharks do not have an eating motto ("If a fish has color, find another. Silver or brown, gulp it down"). Nor do they refer to the famous writer, Machiakelpie (no child would understand this pun). Children learn from what they read, and the fishy characters in this book could provide a lifetime of misconceptions. Gray is no role model for attitude and crustaceans are not "just dumb snacks." Parents and teachers need to think before handing readers—even reluctant readers—this book. I recommend reading it first. Shark Wars is the first of the "Shark Wars" series. The prologue provides background. Reviewer: Judy Crowder

Gr 4–7—Gray is a young reef shark growing up in Coral Shiver, one of the shark clans established in the sea in ancient times. The shivers rule the Big Blue, but they must be careful to avoid the "landsharks" who run the world above, hunting and devouring so many fish, including the mighty sharks. Gray, who is growing larger and larger, keeps sneaking off to hunt on his own—something he is as yet forbidden to do—until at last he is exiled from Coral Shiver. Gray's friend Barkley, a dogfish, soon joins him and they try to find a new clan. They encounter Goblin Shiver, which is a bit like a rough street gang ruled by tough-as-barnacles Goblin and sneaky Velenka, who has plans of her own to rule. The first volume of what will obviously become a long series, this story establishes, but doesn't develop, many threads. The result is a sketchy tale with underdeveloped characters and plot, and without a resolution.—Walter Minkel, Austin Public Library, TX

I enjoyed this book alot, when I first got it, I was just reading a chapter a day, but once I got into it, I was reading 5 chapters a day. To me, that was a personal record, considering I'm not much of a reader. So, all in all, if you like animals or fish, or star wars, since this was based off it, you will enjoy this!

Good book about growing up, choosing friends wisely and learning life lessons...when you are a shark in the Big Blue. This is the 1st book in a 6 book series. It tells the story of a young shark named Gray, who after disobeying his shiver's rules, is banished and must make his way in the "world". Along with him is his best friend Barkley. Together they make friends AND enemies. But are enemies really friends and are friends really enemies? Find out in this beginning book and discover what friendship is really about.
