Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Judy Crowder
With television and the Internet, a nonfiction book has to have a lively format, and be packed with facts that are easy and exciting to read in order to attract children's attention. This book, part of the "Insiders" series, seems to do the trick. Illustrations are "3-D" and colorful. Facts are up to date and a single page may include maps or charts, readable paragraphs of facts, boxed asides, plus lots of those details that qualify as "aha!" discoveries. The authors have been very thorough. Chapters include sharks as "super predators," how sharks interact with people, habitats, shark behavior, and reproduction. Most interesting are the final two chapters: "Mighty Hunters" and "Quiet Achievers." Young readers know and are fascinated with ferocious sharks such as hammer heads, great whites, and bull sharks. But the gentle giant whale sharks, wobbegongs that are bottom dwellers and hunt by disguise, and cookie cutter sharks are every bit as interesting. This is the kind of book that a young reader could look at all day. It includes a shark family tree, remarkably detailed drawings of a shark's body, an extensive glossary and index. I LOVE THIS SERIES!

The Insiders series is one of the best kids series that I've seen. The topics are very interesting to my son and he LOVES and studies these books, and he's only 5. Pictures are engaging, vocabulary is educational, and I learn things about the topic too. Highly recommend all of these books. We have each and every one!

    A perfect educational book

My son absolutely loves this book. He has been reading it every night this week. The illustrations are detailed and factual. His favorite parts are the side notes with descriptive images
