Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Beverly Kobrin
At maturity, the sea's prime predator can be from six inches and a few ounces to 60 feet and 20 tons big; white, black, brown, green, purple, blue or polka dotted; and second only, perhaps, to dinosaurs for "grabbing" kids-as you'll discover when you put within easy reach Erik and Sherrie Stoops' seven question and answer formatted chapters on how sharks live, defend themselves, and interact with humans. Choice photographs illustrate more than 100 questions/answers in an attractive, perfect-for-reluctant-reader reference or Sustained-Silent-Reading recommendation.
School Library Journal
Gr 3-5-A poorly conceived introduction to sharks in a question-and-answer format. The information is scattered over the pages and accompanied by small full-color photographs and diagrams. The questions range from such standards as what is the largest, smallest, strangest looking, rarest, etc., to the ridiculous, e.g., ``Do sharks have friends?'' While the format can be entertaining and enticing to reluctant readers, it presents the material in a fragmented, poorly organized fashion. For instance, a shark's nose is discussed on one page; its sense of smell is described 20 pages later, and entries in the index are under ``nose'' and ``senses'' (not ``smell'' or ``scent''). The definition of spiracle is confusing, and whether sharks eat dead animals always, sometimes, or never is not clearly explained. The photographs vary widely in quality; some are bright and crisp, some are too dark, and the subject is too far from the camera in others. In addition, with so many small pictures per page, it's often difficult to match illustration and caption. With so many good shark books in so many formats to choose from, this one can be skipped.-Frances E. Millhouser, Reston Regional Library, VA
