Children's Literature - Judy Crowder
Are sharks mindless, menacing predators or remarkable, ocean-dwelling creatures? This book, part of the "Nature's Children" series, faces the question head on, with well-researched text and colorful photo illustrations. The book's cover features the typical ferocious shark rearing out of the water with its jaws open—trying for sensational appeal? Yet the content of the book is a thoughtful overview of these fish. According to the author, sharks are designed for survival. Their bodies are built for fast, flexible swimming. They have great eyesight and hearing, with a special sense that picks up vibrations in the water. The book goes into detail about shark skin, consisting of scales called dermal denticles which point toward the shark's tail, thus reducing the friction between skin and water, as well as keeping algae and barnacles from sticking. A plethora of shark books is available for young readers these days; too many, in my mind, especially in this day and economy, when libraries have less and less money to spend on nonfiction books. My advice is to look for volumes about these fascinating animals that include not just basic facts, but "I didn't know that!" information for young readers. This book has a lot going for it: an extensive glossary of words featured in red print throughout the book, an attractive format with plenty of illustrations, charts, maps and specially boxed "Fun Facts," (for example one that states more people are likely to die from insect or dog attacks than sharks). The book features a "Fact File" including basic information, a map showing the range of great whites, books and web sites for further study and index. Reviewer: Judy Crowder
