School Library Journal
Gr 4-7-Eye-catching photographs and clear prose demystify these much-feared creatures. Sure bait to induce a greater respect for and understanding of these amazing fish. (Feb. 1993)
Hazel Rochman
Do we need another book about sharks? Like snakes, sharks inspire fear, and that makes them endlessly fascinating. This is an attractively designed volume, with clear type, quality paper, and outstanding full-color photographs, including a view on the cover of an open mouth with lots of daggerlike teeth. The text is packed with information on sharks' physical characteristics, behavior, ecology, and survival. Cerullo's style is generally straightforward ("of the estimated 350 species, only about 5 to 10 percent are considered potential man-eaters"), though there are occasional arch exclamations ("Rubbing a shark the wrong way can definitely be a dangerous experience!"). She includes a brief bibliography and an entertaining quiz about popular misconceptions. The dramatic pictures compel attention--one rare photo shows a baby shark with its yolk sac still attached--and in a brief statement the underwater photographer describes his feelings about diving with sharks. The combination of excitement and straightforward fact is what makes this book compelling.
