Sharks was a great buy for a hardback book. My son had been looked at this book at school and wanted his own copy. Seems to be very informative. He was more excited to see this book than some of his toys he received for Christmas! This one is by far his favorite. I even read it with him. We especially like the diagrams of a human that showed the size of the sea creature as it is relative to us.

My 4 year old daughter received this as a Christmas gift because she loves factual books about sharks and other fish. However, on practically every page they show the shark/fish biting a human or an animal, including dogs on 2 of the pages. Lots of blood too.
Not only is the book way too gory for kids, but I'm afraid of it causing kids to be fearful of these creatures, to the point that they won't want to go into an ocean, lake, or a river. Yes it is good to be educated on common sense when entering an animals territory, but this takes it way too far in my opinion.

In my opinion, this book is too gory for 5 and 6 years old. I bought it because my son loves the "Bugs The World's Most Terrifying Insects" by the same editor, which is much more age appropriate. These are some of the bloody pictures in the Shark book: shark biting diver's elbow, shark biting diver's arm, Wobbegong biting diver's foot, shark biting fisherman's leg, shark bites diver's hand, ray skewers fisherman's wrist, decapitated eel head bites man, scorpionfish spine goes through a man's hand. The list goes on, including a sawfish "sawing" off a man's leg. My son will probably never go in the ocean again and we live at the beach. I have had to replace the book with more appropriate ones.

Well, it can have pretty graphic and gory pictures, but oddly enough my 10 year old daughter is mesmerized by it, and has been reading it a lot!It does show illustrations of fish attacking people, animals, and other fish. Not photographs. A real page turner!

Read and re-read by my Grandsons. Very appealing for those who are fascinated by monsters. These are real monsters and the info is accurate enough for school reports.

This book is one in a million! I had to order a duplicate because my 4 yr old son reads this nearly every day for about a year now. He lugs it with him everywhere and its literally falling apart! I can't say enough about it, its very educational, the pictures are great, very descriptive info, infact my husband and i enjoy too. It will however make you think twice before going into the ocean! And, i didn't realize when i purchased the book there are, on many pages a small graphic picture of the sea animals & the potential harm it can cause. It may trouble some sensitive youngsters, mine paid no attention and we gloss over that when reading to him. I highly recommend this book. Its also the first book that really caught his interest and would actually sit to be read to!

This book features sea animals that are scary and/or odd looking and most are potentially dangerous to humans.
Each creature is profiled thoroughly with great illustrations and all the facts you could ask for, including normal habitat, size compared to humans, lifespan and diet. Also provided are simple facts and stories and legends about the profiled animal.
I can't say enough about the photos and illustrations. They are very well done and quite colorful. They give an accurate impression of the creatures.
I have to say, the book goes for the "ick" factor and may appeal more to boys than girls of this age. It tells the facts of the animal but highlights the scary and dangerous and sometimes gross. There are no friendly dolphins or majestic whales but there is no end of creatures that look like your worst "sea" themed nightmare.
This book would be very helpful to anyone doing a class report on sea animals.
