Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Judy Crowder
"Dive with the world's most famous fish," Arlon invites young readers. Who can resist? Shark enthusiasts of any age can indulge in shark overload with this colorful book, part of the "Discover More" series from Scholastic. Arlon begins with the basics, such as "what is a shark?" Readers will discover that sharks are powerful predatory fish, of which there are more than 400 kinds. Despite the obligatory terrifying cover shot of a great white with teeth barred, this book includes some important facts. First, sharks are threatened. Readers can find endangered sharks pictured throughout the book while considering that sharks can be scary but humankind is dangerous to sharks. Second, a shark's skeleton is made of cartilage, not bone, to provide a lighter and more flexible structure. The book goes on to feature a variety of shark types, with details about the number of species, an example, and a "fun fact." For example, if the reader is interested in dogfish, he/she will learn that there are 119 species of dogfish, one example is the spiny dogfish and, in fact, the spiny dogfish is one of the most common kinds of sharks. The book also includes sharks' close relatives (e.g., skates, rays), a two-page spread on ancient fish that have been on earth for millions of years (e.g., megalodon). Readers can also learn about shark predator-prey behavior, reproduction, physiology, feeding behavior, habitat, and shark babies. Arlon even includes a "hall of fame" that identifies the largest, fastest, most poisonous, smallest, deadliest, and so on. Of course, no shark book would be complete without mention of types of shark attacks, including surfing survivors that have lost limbs to sharks. Finally, the book discussed how scientists track and tag sharks, some bizarre items sharks have eaten, myths and legends about sharks, plus information about what readers can do to help protect sharks. The book finishes up with an interview with a shark scientist, an extensive glossary, an index, an acknowledgments page, plus details about how to get a free digital companion book and "learn even more."
