    A Must Read

This is my second book I've read in the Sharpe series and it has whet my appetite to read more. Cornwell does well mixing historical events with fiction. In this we really get a sense of the brutality of war with a mix of romance. It seems though Simmerson plays a smaller role than I expected. Sharpe is at his best in battle. I'm looking forward to adding the series to my nook. I would reccommend this for book clubs focused on historical fiction.

    Excitement! Action! History!

The entire Sharpe series is one of the best read's I've ever had! Sharpe's Eagle roils with action and intregue. Anyone who does not become totally involved with the two underdogs, Sharpe and Harper, has not one shred of empathy!

    Great!

This is surely one of Cornwell's greatest works. He combines a crafty opponent within Sharpe's own ranks Gibbons with an imposing enemy and a difficult job to do. First of all, thank god he was finally brevetted captain. The poignant battle scene was altogether a great ending to a great book. Trust Cornwell to come up with such wily battle schemes for Sharpe to deploy such as the riflemen feigning death. He has such a talent for recreating the battles in an utterly believable manner. And the victory at the end is all too bittersweet. A French standard, one of the finest of all Sharpe's achievements.

Saw it on Masterpiece Theatre, read the whole series!

I saw 2 episodes of Sharpe on Masterpiece Theatre about 10 years ago--Eagle and Rifles. I was so intrigued by the idea of the unreality of becoming an officer 'from the ranks', I had to try the books. I was hooked. Since then, I've read the whole series, and so have many family members. We are thrilled Sharpe is 'continuing' in the India 'prequels'. While each book can be read alone, it is fascinating to read them in chronological order--makes you want to trek around Spain and see the battle sites. In fact, I went to Waterloo just to see it after reading about that battle! Enjoy!
