Overview

It is 1814 and the defeat of Napolean seems imminent - if the well-protected city of Toulouse can be conquered. For Richard Sharpe, the battle turns out to be one of the bloodiest of the Peninsula Wars, and he must draw on his last reserves of strength to lead his troops to victory.

But before Sharpe can lay down his sword, he must fight a different sort of battle. Accused of stealing Napolean's personal treasure, Sharpe escapes from a British military court and embarks on the battle of his life - armed only with the unflinching resolve to protect his honor.

It is 1814 and the defeat of Napoleon seems imminent. But before Richard Sharpe can lay down his sword, he must fight a different sort of war. Accused of stealing Napoleon's personal treasures, Sharpe embarks on the battle of his life, armed with only an unflinching resolve to protect his honor and to inflict devastating revenge. Bernard Cornwell's tenth Sharpe novel.

Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
The 10th in Cornwell's series ( Sharpe's Rifles , etc.) is a corker. It is early 1814 and Major Richard Sharpe is still with one-eyed Capt. Frederickson and giant Sgt. Maj. Harper. Sharpe's French nemesis Major Ducos, in the first of a series of betrayals, has stolen a fortune from Napoleon and framed Sharpe for the crime. As fugitives from the British Army and the restored French royalist regime, Sharpe, Frederickson and Harper travel across France and into Naples to find Ducos and clear themselves. They must also deal with a loyal Bonapartist general and a rapacious Neapolitan cardinal, both of whom want the treasure. Sharpe has further problems with a fickle young wife in Regency London and an unlikely romantic attachment in Normandy. Fast and gripping, the story is carried by Cornwell's easy hold on vivid period detail. After an alliance of convenience with the Bonapartist general, Sharpe's final escape is literally dazzling. Readers will relish this adventure and eagerly await Sharpe at Waterloo. (May)
Library Journal
In 1814, Richard Sharp must take the well-defended city of Toulouse to secure the defeat of Napoleon. But after this bloodiest of battles, Napoleon's personal treasure disappears. Sharp, framed by a clever renegade French commander, must escape from a British military prison, find the real culprit, and recover the gold and jewels if he is to save his career and good name. This volume, a brilliant historic action, adventure, and love story, appeals to a wide audience, much like the other titles in this fabulous series (e.g., Sharpe's Regiment, Audio Reviews, LJ 9/15/94). Frederick Davidson performs an unparalleled dramatization. A fascinating and educational work that will do credit to any library.-James Dudley, Copiague, N.Y.

    Cornwell, Cornwell, Cornwell

Cornwell definitely slipped with this book. He dropped from his usual standard and became a bit sloppy. I have read his entire series and think the books to be great but this was probably one of the most clouded of his gems. I think that all of his books are in sort of the same mold. An affair with a different woman, i.e. Clare Wall, Josefina, Teresa, La Marquesa, Mary, Grace, Astrid and more, sometimes an equal officer i.e. Vicente and Donaju and a murderous opponent i.e. Loup, Christopher and Leroux, but this one was so muddled. First of all I believe that he should have either duelled with Jane's new lover or killed Jane for her adultery. It goes against the portrayal of Sharpe that I have ascertained from all his books and it seemed as if he decided to glue this book together. It was not seamless and seemed to be a bit muddy. A good read but this is not the first book to read to get the entire ideals represented by Richard Sharpe in his series. I also think that it was not wise of Cornwell in estranging Frederickson.

    Excellently written!

This story is a truly great book that tells another wonderfully described adventure of one of literary's greatest heroes: Major Sharpe. The battle of Toulouse occurs in this book, and believe me, if you're the type of reader that enjoys highly detailed battle scenes that leave you breathless and amazed, you would enjoy this book. Before I stumbled across the Sharpe series, I was not a fan of historical fiction. This novel, however, is so great! Even if you're not into historical fiction, this would still be entertaining for you. The characters are realistic, the battle scenes are rousing, the twists and turns are flawless and painted beautifully. Magnificent, a purely great adventure read full of hours upon hours of entertainment, depending on how fast you read. I finished this novel within three days, and this is the first book of Sharpe that I've ever read! I plan on reading every last one of Cornwell's Sharpe series!
