This book reaches the simple heart of what happens inside the mind body when a traumatic event occurs. In order to 'walk and talk' out in the World each day, we create a psychological set of 'illusions' about being safe. These 'assumptions' are necessary to function. In reality, we are very physically fragile beings navigating a high-tech, fast paced world full of dangers. We cross streets, we drive cars, we experience natural disasters, we could get shot and the big new threat for the most recent three generations...we have the capacity to blow all life off the earth with nuclear weapons. Our assumptions keep us functioning. When trauma occurs, we are reminded of the reality of our fragility. Bulman's book then takes on the process of how we reconstruct our useful illusions after they have been shattered by trauma. The hope and resilience available to all of us is in this book. It is easy to understand, and it is clinically brilliant. It was out of print for some time. So glad it's back! I have shared this book with many colleagues and clients and will continue to do so.
