Overview

In 1786, the Massachusetts government was seizing farmers’ lands and throwing them in jail for unpaid debts and taxes. But many people couldn’t pay because they had not yet been paid for fighting in the Revolutionary War just a few years before. Frustrated by this treatment, Daniel Shays led upset citizens in an armed revolt. Although their rebellion was short lived, it made clear to America’s leaders that the young nation needed to change its laws, paving the way for the creation of the U.S. Constitution.

Blake A. Hoena grew up in central Wisconsin, where he wrote stories about robots conquering the moon and trolls lumbering around the woods behind his parents house. Using a graphic-novel format with artwork that reflects the time period, the books combine action-packed scenes with chunked text that gives background information on the rise of the protest, its leader, and the movement's impact on national or world history. School Strike for Climate begins with an overview of the devastating effects of climate change, the Paris Agreement, and President Trump's withdrawal from this global treaty before focusing on Greta Thunberg and how the teen's solitary school strikes turned into an international movement to mitigate climate change. Speech bubbles from Greta and world leaders presumably recount actual quotes, although no references are provided. Shays' Rebellion weaves descriptions of the American Revolu­tion and the debt crisis it created into the story of Daniel Shays, who, with other soldiers, formed a rebellion to protest high taxes. The final chapter emphasizes how the resistance influenced the newly created U.S. government and its constitution. Most of the dialogue is imag­ined with a few exceptions of uncited quotes from Founding Fathers. Related facts conclude each volume in this series for researchers and casual nonfiction readers alike.
