Editorial Reviews

School Library Journal - School Library Journal
Gr 4-7An introductory biography that is marred by typographical errors and/or misprints. Youngsters, particularly reluctant readers, will appreciate the large-type print; the brief, aptly titled chapters; and Johnson's objective, readable style of writing. The large, clearly reproduced and captioned black-and-white photos that appear throughout are a real strength. While Lillian M. Fisher's Brave Bessie (Hendrick-Long, 1995) offers more elaboration about some of the high points of Coleman's life, its illustrations are too small to study the details. Philip S. Hart's Up in the Air (Carolrhoda, 1996) provides the best combination of highly suitable format, clearly reproduced illustrations, notes cited, and an impressive bibliography.Phyllis Graves, Creekwood Middle School, Kingwood, TX
