Children's Literature - Patrice Belotte
Ken has no idea what his day has in store for him. It all starts when he spies some curious swans swimming outside his bedroom window. His neighbors are acting as wacky as is his teacher, when she asks about woodchucks chucking wood on a pop quiz at a school. Then, his class is visited by three parents who talk to the children about their professions. However, the parents' presentations leave Ken with their words rambling around inside his head. When the day ends, Ken's father does not put an end to the wackiness when he will not let Ken put on his night light. Loewen utilizes common and unique tongue twisters to not just baffle the reader, but to actually compile a story about a little boy who is confounded by all the words swirling around him on an average day. Before the reader meets Ken, tongue twisting is explained in kid-friendly languageā€”it makes sense to imagine that our minds and mouth have to work together to speak. It is just that sometimes, we get all twisted up! Each segment of Ken's day is annotated with vocabulary and explanations to help the reader understand what makes the words so twisty. Alliteration, homophones, consonants, and vowels are each explained in relation to a tongue twister to help the readers understand the saying and to make sense of how the words connect or relate to each other in the phrase. Loewen offers additional tongue twisters and ideas for further learning at the end of the book, along with a glossary of key terminology. As part of the "Ways to Say It" series, the book also offers a list of additional books for interested readers and access to a website where the reader can find information or play educational games online.
