She Thinks I Still Care: The George Jones Collection (The United Artists Years)

All Music Guide - Stephen Thomas Erlewine
She Thinks I Still Care: The George Jones Collection The United Artists Years is a comprehensive double-disc retrospective of Jones' four years with UA, featuring 40 songs, including 21 country Top 40 hits. His time with United Artists was essentially a transitional period, as he moved from the hardcore honky tonker of his Starday-Mercury years to the country crooner of his Musicor era, which means there are several cuts on the set that fall somewhere between the two extremes. His time with United Artists was essentially a transitional period, as he moved from the hardcore honky tonker of his Starday-Mercury years to the country crooner of his Musicor era, which means there are several cuts on the set that fall somewhere between the two extremes. It also means that there is a handful of mediocre cuts on the collection, but some of George's absolute best is here -- not only familiar hits like "The Race Is On," "She Thinks I Still Care," "A Girl I Used to Know," "Your Heart Turned Left And I Was on the Right," "You Comb Her Hair," and his remarkable bluegrass duets with Melba Montgomery, but also lesser-known gems like "Open Pit Mine," "My Tears Are Overdue," and "Wrong Number." Although his United Artists recordings are on the whole his most uneven work -- the Musicor albums may have been inconsistent, but they were usually interesting -- he made a number of terrific records for the label, and She Thinks I Still Care is easily the best way to hear them. The set is more thorough, representative, and listenable than All-Time Greatest Hits, and the original albums contain so much duplication that they're frustrating for anyone but die-hard fans.
