Overview

Mingling actual historical events of the American Revolution, Shed No Tears introduces the reader to a collection of young men and women shaping their lives and a nation born from the wilderness of Colonial America. Jonathan Breckenridge, the patriotic rebel son of Boston s wealthiest candle maker; Zachary Clark, a man grounded in the earth, and the son of Charles Town s leading physician; Jackson Richards, the heir to Charles Town s largest plantation; and finally, Solomon Cooke, angry son of the maker of the most popular saddle in all of the North American colonies.

Friends since childhood they are drawn even closer together, and eventually torn apart, by a common struggle against a far away King, and a greater struggle to convince their fellow citizens of the equality existing between all men. Shed No Tears is the interlocking saga of lives interwoven by fate, events and circumstances, and the winds of change. Historic, romantic, and haunting, Shed No Tears starts with the birth of a nation crippled by the hypocrisy of slavery, and ends in the classic style of toe to toe standoff between good and evil; idealism and greed; slavery and freedom; love and hate; and patriotism and treason.

The story is so well written and it really is a page 'turner'. The story is told from various perspectives not only the slave's point of view. He uses humor, shock and tragedy to describe a period in the history of our country. Good Book!!!!

A lot was learned about the subject matter of Shed No Tears. It seems not all the facts of the era had been fully exposed, until the writing of this book. I also enjoyed learning the cast of characters. Some I dispised, some I fell in love with. To this day, I still think of them. I highly recommend it.

This book is guaranteed to hold your interest from start to finish. Will make your mood change from happy to sad and even anger in a matter of a few sentences. It is very compelling ~ hard to put down. Ollie Morgan has a way of building strong, convincing characters that makes you feel their pain and happiness and that they are real people. This is an extraordinary book. Very emotional at times. I certainly will be one to look for his sequel when it hits our book store. Thanks Mr. Morgan for a 'very good read.'

This is a wonderful book. It catches you from the first page, you won't want to put it down. I learned things about slavery that I didn't know. I didn't want it to end. I am eagerly waiting for the sequel.

From chapter to chapter, I became more engrossed! With my full life, at times I hated to have to put the book down and do the many things on my `to do¿ list. So, I hauled the book with me everywhere, just in case I had an opportunity to read a few more pages. It traveled in the Jeep with me, and it even traveled on the Harley with me. It spent many nights right next to me in bed. Oh no¿it didn¿t get placed on the bedside table it was on the bed with me! Adventure, comedy and romance: you shared it all! I tell my students to paint pictures with their words, and that¿s exactly what you did. The reader must not only understand what is written, but also he or she must FEEL the experience, TASTE the experience, SMELL the experience! And, that I did! At times I cried, and at times I laughed. Even at times I was aroused! Ollie, as the ending of the book neared, I found myself not wanting to finish. I wanted your writing to keep my emotions stirred. But, knowing the ending is just the beginning of a new chapter, one for Solomon, Abigail and the others, I read the ending with a smile! Thank you for providing me with history coupled with the enticing adventures of the many characters!

This novel is an atypical account of the American Revolution from the perspective of a free Black Colonial male. It provides a unique perspective not published in most historical recounts of the birth of this nation. Shed No Tears is a rich tapestry of adventure, love, hatred, saddness and the human spirit. It evokes thoughts, emotions and reactions at every turn. I strongly recommend this book to all critical thnkers and socially conscientious readers. It's well-woven tapestry provides something for all; regardless of your individual perspective and knowledge of the American Revolution.

Definitely not your typical story about U.S. history! Nor of the African-American experience during revolutionary times. No handkerchief head negroes here or those trying to get along to 'get along'. 'Shed No Tears' will hold your attention from page one to the end and have you begging for a sequel(which I hear is in the works). The lead character is a strong no-nonsense, intelligent African-American male, who truly lives in a world of hypocrisy that at times verges on the fringes of madness. Solomon Cooke, cool, calm and collected yet ready to drop the hammer on any fool when life or love is in danger. Not only must he deal with the madness going on around him he must also deal with the challenges of finding a true love and happiness. Romance, drama, suspense, humor and unfortunately tragedy are all here. And yes, I agree with several of the other reviewers, however with one caveat, I believe 'Shed No Tears' WILL BE an excellent movie. Truly a great work.

Morgan masterfully blurs the line between history and fiction, often giving his readers the feeling they are studying an alternative history course text, rather than simply savoring a delicious novel. Shed No Tears' central character Solomon Cooke navigates through war-time battles, through the tests of friendships and alliances and through vivid passion, all with the style of an early American John Shaft. Shed No Tears is a spicy page turner that will leave you thirsting for a sequel.

This book was given to me as a gift....normally this is not my type of reading material - But I fell in love with these characters! I felt as though I was with them through all of their trials & tribulations and their joy. I can't wait for the sequel to find out more about the lives of Solomon, Abigail & Zack. Mr. Morgan is an EXCELLENT author. (When is the movie?)

I found this to be a refreshing look at Colonial American life. It was really nice to read about African Americans that were not painted to be ignorant at a time that is so lost in story telling. The Author really put forth an effort to tell this story.

This is one of the best historical/period novels that I have read in a long time. A true saga, with all of the suspense, drama, and action that one might expect. Many of the characters became friends. Can't wait for the sequel to find out what happened to them, and more than that, "Shed No Tears" would make a great movie!!!!
