Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
This lift-the-flap book advertises itself as having the ability to help youngsters "turn words in WordThings. WordThings will help young readers link written language to objects, actions, and ideas." Apparently no one checked with educators. Before words are introduced, letters must be learned and the letters here are not easy to read. For instance, on the first page a bear with a megaphone is yelling, "Roll up, roll up, come one, come all! Come to Sheep's magic show!" The bear is composed of the not-very-clear letters "b-e-a-r" written sideways. All other animals throughout the book are made up of alphabet letters, unless only their heads show—or, in the case of the sheep, unless she is wearing a cape. Sometimes it is as difficult to recognize the alphabet animals, as it is to discern the letters that form their shapes. The lifted flaps neither amuse nor move the story forward. And the inadequate story cannot compete for interest with the difficulty of identifying the animals. Finally, accomplished readers never turn words into "word things." 2004, Running Press KIDS, Ages 4 to 8.

Meet the Author

Jacqueline Moody-Luther is one of the creative minds behind Word World. Currently she is developing a Word World animated television series for PBS that helps preschoolers become reading ready. Jacqui lives in Connecticut with her family.Words are like living entities to Jacqui. She first had the pleasure of seeing her words “come alive” as a playwright. She has also taught writing on the college level, and worked with preschoolers as well. Although she has edited a variety of subject matter over the years, Jacqui is happiest writing and editing children’s literature. She is fascinated by the power that words can have over-and can bestow upon-children.
