Overview

(Book). If Howard Kaylan had sung only one song, the Turtles' 1967 No. 1 smash hit "Happy Together," his place in rock-and-roll history would still be secure. But that recording, named in 1999 by BMI as one of the top 50 songs of the 20th century, with over five million radio plays, is only the tip of a rather eye-opening iceberg. For nearly five decades, Howard Kaylan has been a player in the rock-and-roll revolution. In addition to his years with the Turtles, Kaylan was a core member of Frank Zappa's Mothers of Invention and the dynamic duo Flo and Eddie, and part of glam rock history with Marc Bolan and T. Rex. He's also given street cred and harmonies to everyone from John Lennon, Bruce Springsteen and Alice Cooper to the Ramones and Duran Duran, to name just a few. Howard Kaylan's life has been a dangerous ride that he is only too happy to report on, naming names and shedding shocking tales of sex, drugs, and creative excess. Shell Shocked will stand alone as not only one of the best-told music-biz memoirs, but one with a truly candid and unmatchable story of rock-and-roll insanity and success from a man who glories in it all.

If you are of this generation, you will NOT be able to put this book down. Howard was, and continues to be, connected to the legends in the business, as he is one of them. I’ll borrow a quote from Jill Robinson, which sums up my feelings: “Once in a very rare year, there comes along a new book and I say, as I am reading, as my eyes eat words without a blink, as my heart and mind grab each other, This, I say, is The Best Book. I know before the first page is gone. I sense it building. And as the book finishes, I go as slow as I can. I don't want to leave the book's world.” Why a nice girl like me would want to linger here, I cannot explain, but this is my book this rare year. Thanks also to Penn Jillette - you brought a memory roaring back to me. Yes – my first exposure to Frank Zappa was of him being thrust into my living room at the tender age of what – 8?? – courtesy of the Monkees. And if you can catch Howard and Mark – Flo and Eddie – on stage, it’s a guaranteed fabulous experience. Buy this book.

Probably the most honest rock biography that I have ever read. Howard Kaylan's sense of humor translates well to the written word. Highly recommended.

The only thing I recommend when you read this EXCEPTIONAL book is not to read this while you are on an airplane. Your spontaneous, frequent, and occassionally loud laughter may startle some people. This is an incredibly hillarious, moving, raw, delightful, insightful, historical (aka: bits of Lincoln, the US military draft, Nixon, and everything inbetween) book......and did I mention ENTERTAINING? I was never a good reader, nor did I every have a desire to read ANY book (my wife will kill me if she knows I am saying this), but once I opened SHELL SHOCKED, I couldn't put it down (in the bathroom, at red traffic lights, on airplanes, in lines waiting to get on airplanes, etc. etc.) and I completed it in 2 days!! I thought I knew just about everything about the 1960s and 70s, but after reading SHELL SHOCKED, I consider myself a connoisseur....thanks Howard!!! (PLUS...the book has pictures!!!....always a plus in any book!).

Howard's book is one you can not put down. He takes you through a journey of an incredible career and his life. If you like stories about 60's & 70's artists, this one is great! Howard is a great writer. I was touched by his piece on Harry Nilsson. I was a fan of theirs when I was a child - and loved them ever since. The Turtles played our charity events many times and just thrilled the audience. Even to this day they are outstanding. This is an enjoyable read! Run to get this book!
