Shelley!/The Things We Did Last Summer

Shelley!/The Things We Did Last Summer

4.0 1
by Shelley Fabares

Collectables revives two of Shelley Fabares' albums from 1962 on this CD, encompassing her three biggest hits and a slew of interesting album tracks. This package nicely augments Rhino's best-of since there is so little overlap, but it also suffices as a stand-alone anthology since Fabares' big hits, namely "Johnny Angel" and "Johnny Loves Me," are accounted for.

Overview

Collectables revives two of Shelley Fabares' albums from 1962 on this CD, encompassing her three biggest hits and a slew of interesting album tracks. This package nicely augments Rhino's best-of since there is so little overlap, but it also suffices as a stand-alone anthology since Fabares' big hits, namely "Johnny Angel" and "Johnny Loves Me," are accounted for. Shelley! includes a couple of updates of pop standards and a bouncy duet with Paul Petersen ("Very Unlikely"), while The Things We Did Last Summer is overwhelmingly comprised of covers of contemporary hits. That may not sound particularly enticing, but it's a lot of fun to hear a female vocalist take the lead on songs like "Palisades Park" and Brian Hyland's "Sealed With a Kiss," and the selection of material overall can't be faulted.

The sound was the desired result. Shelley wasn't really a singer, but came to pop from TV and film. At 18 she had the #1 hit ''Johnny Angel'' while play- ing Donna Reed's TV daughter. The musicians include Glen Campbell & Hal Blaine. The backing group includes Darlene Love. Great sounds from the Kennedy era when pop music was exploding with girls and girl group sounds. If you like Annette, the Angels, or Lesley Gore, buy this CD.
