I first owned this book in the original paperback format & quite literally used it to DEATH! Out of almost 10 seashell field guides I own, I have easily turned to this one the most!
Mind you, it only scratches the surface of the number of easily identifiable species (if you consider 500 species a small number - LOL), but it's great starter guide for those looking for the most exotic & beautiful jewels of the sea. The format of identifying plates are easy to read & understand, especially after looking at the example on page 11.
Photo illustrations are superb quality & the remarks on the identifying features are a nice touch. It's often difficult to get a written-out description of species in field guides, so the fact that this one does is very satisfying.
When the binding on my paperback began to fall apart due to very frequent use (NOT this one I'm reviewing), I realized that only a hardcover format could hold up to me. I was extremely happy when I found out that this book was available in hardcover & snatched it up immediately!
